  9.      patch-metamail - Install a  patch  to  the  latest  metamail
  10.      release

  13.      patch-metamail    source-tree-root  patch-number   [hostname
  14.      [dirname [prefix]]]

  16. DESCRIPTION
  17.      The _p_a_t_c_h-_m_e_t_a_m_a_i_l program will attempt to retreive a  patch
  18.      file for the metamail distribution, using anonymous ftp to a
  19.      trusted server, and then install that patch  in  your  local
  20.      copy of the distribution.

  22.      The first two arguments, which are required,  are  the  root
  23.      directory  of  your local copy of the metamail source direc-
  24.      tory, and the patch number.  The former  is  site-dependent,
  25.      the latter is patch-dependent.

  27.      In general, patch-metamail is  intended  to  be  called  via
  28.      metamail, with a mailcap entry like the following:

  30.      application/x-metamail-patch;patch-metamail source-tree-root
  31.      %{patchnumber}; needsterminal
  32.  
  33.      The default values for the host to  ftp  to,  the  directory
  34.      name to retrieve the file from, and the patch file name pre-
  35.      fix are hard-wired  to  thumper.bellcore.com,  pub/nsb,  and
  36.      "mm.patch.".   While  you  can override these on the command
  37.      line, it would be a big mistake to make these  parameterized
  38.      based  on the contents of a mail message, because then some-
  39.      one could  spoof  you  into  retrieving  a  new  version  of
  40.      metamail  with  a Trojan horse from their site!  However, as
  41.      long as you retain control over what host and directory  the
  42.      patches  are retrieved from, this program is reasonably safe
  43.      (as safe as the host you're depending on, anyway).
