  5. The Microsoft Windows NT product group has recently identified a floppy disk 
  6. setup problem with the October Beta release of Windows NT.  On certain 
  7. systems, an error may occur during installation.  When the message "Please 
  8. Insert Disk #6" appears, and Disk #6 is inserted and the error continues 
  9. to recur, the installation of Windows NT is prevented.  If you attempt   
  10. floppy disk installation, you may experience this problem.

  12. The behavior occurs due to a problem identified in the floppy driver provided 
  13. in the Beta release and FLOPPY.SYS was not attempting to retry the operation 
  14. in the presence of this error.  If the error occurs, you will be unable to  
  15. complete installation from floppy disk which may leave your system in an 
  16. inconsistent state.  Quit the Setup program and boot from an MS-DOS floppy 
  17. boot disk.  The system may require that you run the MS-DOS SYS utility on 
  18. the hard drive to recover your environment.  Follow the instructions below
  19. before attempting to reinstall Windows NT again from floppy disk.

  22. the driver as instructed.  We appreciate our customers efforts in

  30. To retrieve the corrected files from the WINNT CompuServe forum:
  31.  
  32.     Connect to the WINNT CompuServe forum, Library 2 where you will find 
  33.     WNT004.ZIP.  This file was created using the PKZIP file compression 
  34.     utility.  You will need the PKUNZIP utility to extract the files to
  35.     a directory on your hard drive.  PKUNZIP can be found as PKZ110.EXE 
  36.     in Library 2 of the IBMCOM forum.  Download PKZ110.EXE and execute 
  37.     the file to extract the PKUNZIP.EXE utility.  Create a directory on
  38.     your hard disk where the extracted files can be placed.  For example, 
  39.     C:\WNT004.  To extract the WNT004.ZIP file, type: 
  40.     PKUNZIP WNT004.ZIP C:\WNT004
  41.     to decompress the files into the directory.  The following files can 
  42.     now be seen:

  45.     README.TXT

  50. To apply the affected driver:

  52. If you utilize a system with only one 3.5" floppy disk drive, take the 
  53. following steps unless you have a double floppy drive system. 
  54.  
  55. 1.      Insert the floppy disk into the floppy disk drive containing the 
  56. updated version of FLOPPY.SY$.  
  57.  
  58. 2.      Using the File Manager or copy command, copy FLOPPY.SY$ located 
  59. on the patch diskette to a location on your hard disk.  For example, File, 
  60. Copy, To: C:\.
  61.  
  62. 3.      Remove the patch diskette and insert Disk #6 of the Windows NT 
  63. floppy disk install set into the disk drive. 
  64.  
  65. 4.      Using the File Manager, locate FLOPPY.SY$ on the hard drive and copy 
  66. directly to the root of Disk #6 replacing the failing driver.  For example, 
  67. File, Copy, To: A:

  69. 5.      You may now attempt to reinstall Windows NT from floppy disk.
