  17. **  Introduction
  18.  
  19. The Internet site ftp.cica.indiana.edu (129.79.20.27) is an
  20. anonymous-ftp clearinghouse for MicroSoft Windows (version 3.x only)
  21. applications, tips, utilities, drivers, bitmaps, etc.  (The machine is
  22. a SUN Sparcstation 1 running SunOS 4.1.3 with 28MB of main memory and
  23. 4 gigabytes of local user file space.) 
  24.  
  25. CICA (Center for Innovative Computer Applications) currently provides
  26. to the anonymous ftp user, free of charge, over 600Mb of PUBLIC DOMAIN
  27. and SHAREWARE Windows-related files.  The files are *NOT* virus or
  28. trojan-checked, and by retrieving software from CICA, you assume full
  29. responsibility for their use on your machine(s).
  30.  
  31. FTP activity at CICA is relentless: Approximately 48,000 logins per
  32. month (or, an average of 1,625 ftp logins that fetch over one gigabyte
  33. of data per day).  Therefore users who access this site are URGED to
  34. do so during the non-load hours of 7pm to 7am Eastern Standard Time.
  35. (Eastern Standard is Greenwich Mean Time -5 hours.)  Abuse of the
  36. system during load hours will not be tolerated.
  37.  
  38. You may find the program AUTOFTP, located in pub/unix, helpful to you
  39. in automating ftp file transfers during non-load hours.  This program
  40. can be scheduled at non-peak hours to download files from any ftp
  41. site.
  42.  
  43. You may also find us via GOPHER to ftp.cica.indiana.edu, and through
  44. the World Wide Web (http://cica.cica.indiana.edu).
  45.  
  46. ** Internet Access: FTP
  47.  
  48. To access CICA, type "ftp 129.79.20.27" to your prompt.  You'll be
  49. asked for a login name (type "anonymous").  Enter your username and
  50. sitename (e.g., "bob@black.lodge.wa.edu") as your password.  THIS STEP
  51. IS MANDATORY.  WE ENFORCE LEGAL PASSWORDS.  A shorthand way of
  52. entering your password (for those of you who have terribly long
  53. machine names) would be: "username@".  The system will expand your
  54. sitename, so just type your username followed by the "at sign".
  55.  
  56. If you want to be adventurous and automate the login process, create a
  57. file in your home directory called ".netrc" and make it accessible
  58. only by you (e.g., "chmod og-rwx .netrc").  (This is a VERY IMPORTANT
  59. STEP!  Failure to have correct permissions on ".netrc" will cause it
  60. to be IGNORED by ftp/telnet!)
  61.  
  62. Add the following lines to your .netrc file:
  63.  
  64.   machine ftp.cica.indiana.edu
  65.   login anonymous
  66.   password enter_your_username@machine.domain.here
  67.  
  68. This will now eliminate the prompting of your username and password
  69. upon subsequent ftp sessions.
  70.  
  71. NOTE:  On some flavors of Unix, each.netrc entry should only consume
  72. one line.  For example:
  73.  
  74. machine ftp.cica.indiana.edu login anonymous password username@...
  75.  
  76. So this might be something to try if the above example doesn't work.

  78. **  Internet Access: World Wide Web and Gopher
  79.  
  80. We are available to both WWW and Gopher users.
  81.  
  82. Our gopher server is gopher.cica.indiana.edu on port 70, the URL for
  83. our World Wide Web (WWW) server is http://www.cica.indiana.edu/

  85. **  Mail Server Access
  86.  
  87. Some lucky individuals have had success accessing the files at
  88. anonymous ftp sites using the BITNET ftp server at Princeton
  89. University.  To find out more about this, send a one-line mail message
  90. containing the word HELP to one of the following addresses:

  160. ** Getting Software:  The INDEX and ls-ltR Files
  161.  
  162. Go into the win3 directory ("cd pub/pc/win3"), and see what we have by
  163. getting the BINARY (compressed) version of our INDEX file (type "get
  164. index.zip" to your ftp prompt).  Note:  You will need PKZip version
  165. 2.04g (or better) to unzip this file.  (If you do not have PKUNZIP.EXE
  166. 2.04g or better, please get the file:

  170. This is a self-extracting archive file that will bring you up-to-date.
  171.  
  172. Back to our INDEX file...
  173.  
  174. The INDEX file (inside the .zip file) contains a list of all the files
  175. available on CICA, organized by subdirectory.  Each listing consists
  176. of the file's name, date received (YYMMDD format), and a brief, and an
  177. oftentimes subjective description of the file.  The INDEX file is
  178. updated only after new files in the "UPLOADS" area have been moved
  179. into appropriate subdirectory on disk.  (Set your tab stops at 8 for
  180. correct viewing.)
  181.  
  182. For those with disk space quotas, restricted download limits, etc., I
  183. have made attempts to identify those files whose size is greater than
  184. 500Kb.  While I understand that many people would like to have the
  185. file sizes as a part of the INDEX entry, it's just too time consuming
  186. at this point to add this feature. (Each INDEX entry is created
  187. manually, by hand. Eight characters (plus padding) eats into valuable
  188. space for the file description.)
  189.  
  190. The file "ls-ltr.zip" is a compressed version of a texfile output
  191. from the "ls -ltR" command on the entire Windows directory structure.
  192. This file presents an ordered list sorted BY DATE of the files in each
  193. subdirectory.  This file is updated several times daily.  Note:  You
  194. will need PKZip version 2.04g (or better) to unzip this file. 
  195.  
  196. ** Downloading Software
  197.  
  198. Public domain and Shareware utilities maintained here are in
  199. compressed format.  You will need to have either ZOO, PKUNZIP, PKXARC,
  200. or LHARC to work with these files on the PC.  Look in the
  201. pub/pc/starter directory if you don't have these utilities.
  202.  
  203. Change into individual directories (e.g., "cd fonts") and issue a
  204. "dir" or "ls -CF" command to see the available files.  When you are
  205. ready to download, tell ftp you're transferring binary files (type
  206. "tenex" or "binary" [or worse yet, "quote type L"] to your ftp prompt)
  207. and you're ready to retrieve files (e.g., "get filename").
  208.  
  209. ** Uploading Software
  210.  
  211. Please place all uploads in the pub/pc/win3/UPLOADS subdirectory.  The
  212. same rules apply to uploading as downloading: if the file is binary,
  213. type "tenex" (or "binary" or "quote type L") first before doing a "put
  214. filename". 
  215.  
  216. There is a standard file format here so that you won't need fifteen
  217. different file compression utilities to unwrap the software.
  218. Therefore, please use PKZIP (version 1.1 or later) or ZOO (version
  219. 2.00 or later) to wrap your software.  PKZIP-Self Extracting Archive
  220. Files may be uploaded and will probably be converted to .ZIPs at a
  221. later date (especially self-extracting .EXE files that are ZIP-ped!)
  222.  
  223. Lastly, and most importantly, files placed in the "UPLOADS" directory
  224. that contain no clue as to their usefulness will be removed.
  225.  
  226. ** A Note about our Time Zone
  227.  
  228. We are located in the beautiful Southern Indiana.  Indiana is the
  229. western boundary of the Eastern Time Zone.  Indiana (like parts of
  230. Arizona), as you might NOT know, DOES NOT ADJUST ITS CLOCKS FOR
  231. DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME. Therefore, we are on Eastern Standard Time
  232. (EST) 365 days per year. 
  233.  
  234. When the United States moves its clocks in April for Daylight Savings
  235. Time, that places us, while still in Eastern Standard Time, on the
  236. same time as Chicago--which is on Central DAYLIGHT Time.  So, during
  237. DST, EST==CDT.  Confused?  So are we.
  238.  
  239.  
  240. ** Files NOT Accepted at ftp.cica.indiana.edu
  241.  
  242. As is a standard practice with most anonymous-ftp sites, certain
  243. programs, files, or software are outside the mission of archive
  244. operations, and therefore will NOT be selected for inclusion in the
  245. collection.  These files can include (but are not limited to) any
  246. software: containing prejudiced or discriminatory material related to
  247. (but not limited to) religion, politics, race, ethnicity, gender,
  248. sexuality, etc.; that is adult or sexually-explicit in nature; or
  249. otherwise considered unsuitable by the site moderator. 
  250.  
  251. ** A Note About Bitmap Files (.BMP)
  252.  
  253. Since the inception of this archive in June 1990, many thousands of
  254. users have had access to these files and plenty of time to
  255. "snarf and share" the bitmap images with their friends, families, and
  256. their favorite local bulletin boards and ftp sites.  Therefore, the
  257. images stored here will age six months before they are purged.  This
  258. is the only relief valve we currently have to keep disk space alive
  259. for the other files.  
  260.  
  261. ** Mirror Sites to the CICA Ftp Collection
  262.  
  263. Several other Internet archives "mirror" the CICA collection; that is,
  264. they maintain an exact mirror image of the files contained here on
  265. their own machine.  One of the major benefits of mirror sites is that
  266. you can select a site close to home.  This will generally increase the
  267. speed and reliability of connections for those folks overseas.
  268.  
  269. One word of caution: The information below is ALWAYS subject to
  270. change.  It has been VERY DIFFICULT keeping up with the comings and
  271. goings of mirror sites.  (As of this writing (Wed Mar 23 1994), there
  272. are more mirror sites that I know of, but haven't had the time to add
  273. them to this file.  Please stay tuned.)

  320. The entire CICA Windows archive is published on *THREE* CDROMs!
  321. These discs (which you found this file on) contain all of the files
  322. in the archive uncompressed and include a Windows (tm) frontend for
  323. easy browsing, running, and installation of any of the included
  324. material.  These discs, which conform to the ISO-9660 standard,
  325. contain approximately 1600Mb of files.  The set is available for
  326. $25.00 US (plus shipping and handling) from InfoMagic, Inc.

  352. Please, PLEASE remember to type "tenex" or "binary" or "quote type L"
  353. to your ftp program *BEFORE* uploading or downloading binary files.
  354. So many people report "corrupt files" when they didn't type "tenex"
  355. before downloading.  Same goes for uploading files.

  357. Also, if you are stuck in the 1980s and are using KERMIT to transfer
  358. from your Unix (or VAX, God forbid) host to your PC, remember to tell
  359. kermit "set file type binary" before beginning the download.
