  2.       This disc contains the Microsoft Windows Archive from CICA 
  3.      (The Center for Innovative Computing Applications).

  6. INSTALLING THE INFOMAGIC INTERFACE 
  7.  
  8. To use the exclusive InfoMagic Interface you must have Windows 3.1 
  9. installed on your system.  To install the InfoMagic Interface, run 
  10. the SETUP.EXE program in the root directory of Disc 1.  This will 
  11. copy runtime files for the Microsoft Multimedia Viewer (approximately 
  12. 1 MB) to your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, and the InfoMagic Interface 
  13. files (less than 1 MB) to a directory you specify.  It will also 
  14. create a Program Manager group and icon for the application.  Help is 
  15. available within the InfoMagic Interface.

  18. NOTES ON RUNNING APPLICATIONS FROM THE CD 
  19.  
  20. Due to the ISO-9660 naming restrictions which limit the use of 
  21. special characters in filenames, some files on the discs were renamed 
  22. (see Alias Notes below).  When applications are either copied or 
  23. installed via the InfoMagic Interface, the original names are 
  24. restored.  When you request to run a program directly from the CD, 
  25. the Interface determines if any files were renamed.  If so, the 
  26. entire application is copied to the directory specified by the TEMP 
  27. environment variable.  If TEMP is not defined, the application is 
  28. copied to a directory called CICA on the C drive.

  30. NOTE: The InfoMagic Interface does not delete applications which it 
  31. has copied to the temporary directory, you must delete them yourself, 
  32. when the application is terminated.

  35. ALIAS NOTES 
  36.  
  37. The ISO-9660 Level 1 Specification restricts filenames to the 
  38. characters A-Z, 0-9, and "_".  All non-conforming characters have 
  39. been replaced with "_".  In every directory where filenames were 
  40. altered, we have included a file called _ALIASES.___ which lists the 
  41. original name and alias of affected files.

  43. If you copy files directly from the CD (without using the InfoMagic 
  44. Interface), be sure to check for the alias file, and rename copied 
  45. files accordingly.

  48. SHAREWARE
  49.  
  50. Some of the programs on the discs are Shareware.  Although you have
  51. purchased the discs, you have not paid for the Shareware programs.
  52. Shareware programs which are used beyond the authorÆs prescribed
  53. evaluation period require a separate payment to the author.  This
  54. payment is termed "registration", and gives you the legal right to
  55. continue to use the software.  Terms of registration vary from author
  56. to author, but may also include a current version of the program
  57. and/or a printed manual.  For details, consult the registration
  58. information included with each program.

  61. GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE
  62.  
  63. Some programs on the discs are covered by the GNU General Public
  64. License.  This includes most Free Software Foundation software.  The
  65. License ensures that users are free to distribute copies of covered
  66. software and to receive source code if desired.  Source code for many
  67. of the GNU tools is provided on the discs.  Source code for any other
  68. covered software may be obtained directly from InfoMagic on request
  69. (there may be additional distribution fees). The GNU General Public
  70. License is provided, in ASCII text format, in the file COPYING.GNU in
  71. the root directory of Disc 1.

  74. COPYRIGHTED MATERIALS
  75.  
  76. A number of the packages in the CICA archive are either copyrighted
  77. or covered by licenses that explicitly restrict commercial
  78. distribution.  In these cases we have left the entries in the index
  79. files and they will appear in the Interface with a notation that they
  80. have been removed from the discs.  Some examples of copyrighted
  81. material include sound files of movie and television, PC Magazine
  82. utilities, NCSA Mosaic, and Kermit from Columbia University.
