  7. **  Introduction
  8.  
  9. The Internet site ftp.cica.indiana.edu (129.79.20.84) is an
  10. anonymous-ftp clearinghouse for MicroSoft Windows (version 3.x only)
  11. applications, tips, utilities, drivers, bitmaps, etc.  (The machine is
  12. a Sun 3/60 running SunOS 4.1.1 with 8Mb of main memory and 15GB shared
  13. file space.)
  14.  
  15. CICA (Center for Innovative Computing Applications) currently provides
  16. to the anonymous ftp user, free of charge, over 150Mb of PUBLIC DOMAIN
  17. and SHAREWARE Windows-related files.
  18.  
  19. Ftp activity at CICA is relentless: Approximately 48,000 logins per
  20. month (or, an average of 1,625 ftp logins per day).  Therefore users
  21. who access this site are URGED to do so during the non-load hours of
  22. 7pm to 7am Eastern Standard Time.  Abuse of the system during load
  23. hours will not be tolerated.

  25. You may find the program AUTOFTP, located in pub/Unix/autoftp.zoo,
  26. helpful to you in automating ftp file transfers during non-load hours.
  27. This program can be scheduled at non-peak hours to download files from
  28. any ftp site.
  29.  
  30. ** Internet Access
  31.  
  32. To access CICA, type "ftp 129.79.20.84" to your prompt.  You'll be
  33. asked for a login name (type "anonymous").  Enter your username (e.g.,
  34. "bob@black.lodge.wa.edu")
  35.  
  36. If you want to be adventurous and automate the login process, create a
  37. file in your home directory called ".netrc" and make it accessible
  38. only by you (e.g., "chmod og-rwx .netrc") and add the lines:
  39.  
  40.   machine ftp.cica.indiana.edu
  41.   login anonymous
  42.   password enter_your_username@machine.domain.here
  43.  
  44. This will now eliminate the prompting of your username and password
  45. upon subsequent ftp sessions.
  46.  
  47. **  Mail Server Access
  48.  
  49. Some lucky individuals have had success accessing the files at
  50. anonymous ftp sites using the BITNET ftp server at Princeton
  51. University.  To find out more about this, send a one-line mail message
  52. containing the word HELP to one of the following addresses:

  94.   ++ Currently the general Windows utilities directory contains a
  95.      plethora of files.  We hope to soon organize these files into
  96.      their respective general areas of use (e.g., util/communications,
  97.      util/file (editors, viewers, disk utilities), util/pim (personal
  98.      information managers, calendars, organizers, schedulers, etc.),
  99.      util/graphics (clocks, screen savers, paint programs, video
  100.      software, etc.) util/printing, etc.).

  102. ** Getting Software:  The INDEX and ls-ltR Files
  103.  
  104. Go into the win3 directory ("cd pub/pc/win3"), and see what we have by
  105. getting the ASCII file called "INDEX" (type "get INDEX" to your ftp
  106. prompt).
  107.  
  108. The INDEX file contains a list of all the files available on
  109. CICA, organized by subdirectory.  Each listing consists of the file's
  110. name, date received (YYMMDD format), and a brief, and an oftentimes
  111. subjective description of the file.  The INDEX file is updated only
  112. after new files in the "uploads" area have been moved into appropriate
  113. subdirectory on disk.  (Set your tab stops at 8 for correct viewing.)
  114.  
  115. If you would like to view the file during your ftp session, type:
  116.  
  117. ftp> get INDEX |more
  118.  
  119. (Note there is no space before the "more" command.)
  120.  
  121. The file "ls-ltR" is an output from the "ls -ltR" command on the
  122. entire Windows directory structure.  This file presents an ordered
  123. list sorted BY DATE of the files in each subdirectory.  This file is
  124. updated several times daily.
  125.  
  126. ** Downloading Software
  127.  
  128. Public domain and Shareware utilities maintained here are in
  129. compressed format.  You will need to have either ZOO, PKUNZIP, PKXARC,
  130. or LHARC to work with these files on the PC.  Look in the
  131. pub/pc/starter directory if you don't have these utilities.
  132.  
  133. Change into individual directories (e.g., "cd fonts") and issue a
  134. "dir" or "ls -CF" command to see the available files.  When you are
  135. ready to download, tell ftp you're transferring binary files (type
  136. "tenex" or "binary" [or worse yet, "quote type L"] to your ftp prompt)
  137. and you're ready to retrieve files (e.g., "get filename").
  138.  
  139. ** Uploading Software
  140.  
  141. Please place all uploads in the pub/pc/win3/uploads subdirectory.  The
  142. same rules apply to uploading as downloading: if the file is binary,
  143. type "tenex" (or "binary" or "quote type L") first before doing a "put
  144. filename". 
  145.  
  146. There is a standard file format here so that you won't need fifteen
  147. different file compression utilities to unwrap the software.
  148. Therefore, please use PKZIP (version 1.1 or later) or ZOO (version
  149. 2.00 or later) to wrap your software.  PKZIP-Self Extracting Archive
  150. Files may be uploaded and will probably be converted to .ZIPs at a
  151. later date (especially self-extracting .EXE files that are ZIP-ped!)
  152.  
  153. Lastly, and most importantly, files placed in the "uploads" directory
  154. that contain no clue as to their usefulness will be removed.
  155.  
  156. ** A Note About Bitmap Files (.BMP)
  157.  
  158. Since the inception of this archive in June 1990, many thousands of
  159. users have had access to these files and plenty of time to
  160. "snarf and share" the bitmap images with their friends, families, and
  161. their favorite local bulletin boards and ftp sites.  Therefore, the
  162. images stored here will age six months before they are purged.  This
  163. is the only relief valve we currently have to keep disk space alive
  164. for the other files.  
  165.  
  166. **  Mirror Sites to the CICA Ftp Collection
  167.  
  168. Several other Internet archives "mirror" the CICA collection; that is,
  169. they maintain an exact mirror image of the files contained here on
  170. their own machine.

  217. Please, PLEASE remember to type "tenex" or "binary" or "quote type L"
  218. to your ftp program *BEFORE* uploading or downloading binary files.
  219. So many people report "corrupt files" when they didn't type "tenex"
  220. before downloading.  Same goes for uploading files.

  222. Also, if you are stuck in the 1980s and are using KERMIT to transfer
  223. from your Unix (or VAX, God forbid) host to your PC, remember to tell
  224. kermit "set file type binary" before beginning the download.
  225.  
  226. If you want to be adventurous, install Xmodem, Ymodem, and Zmodem on
  227. your host machine.  Chuck Forsberg's public domain sources are in
