  36.  
  37.      Warfarin should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed,
  38. light-resistant container.
  39.  
  40. USES
  41.  
  42.      Warfarin is used to prevent blood clot formation.  It acts by decreasing
  43. the production of blood clotting substances by the liver.
  44.  
  45. TREATMENT
  46.  
  47.      You can take warfarin with a full glass of water.  In order to become
  48. accustomed to taking this medication, try to take it at the same time each
  49. day.
  50.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose as soon as
  51. possible, unless it is almost time for the next dose.  In that case, do not
  52. take the missed dose at all; just return to your regular dosing schedule.  Do
  53. not double the next dose.  If you miss more than two doses in a row of this
  54. medication, contact your doctor.
  55.  
  56. SIDE EFFECTS
  57.  
  58.      Minor.
  59.  
  60.      Blurred vision, cramps, decreased appetite, diarrhea, or nausea.  These
  61. side effects should disappear as your body adjusts to the medication.
  62. Warfarin may produce a red-orange discoloration of urine.
  63.  
  64.      Major.
  65.  
  66.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  67. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  68. bloody or black, tarry stools; blood in sputum; fever; heavy bleeding from
  69. cuts; internal bleeding (signs of internal bleeding include abdominal pain or
  70. swelling and vomiting of blood or material that resembles coffee grounds);
  71. loss of hair; mouth sores; nosebleeds; nausea; rash; red urine; severe
  72. bruising; severe headache; swelling of joints; unusually heavy menstrual
  73. bleeding; or yellowing of the eyes or skin.

  75. INTERACTIONS
  76.  
  77.      Warfarin interacts with several other types of drugs:
  78.      1. Alcohol, allopurinol, amiodarone, anabolic steroids, antibiotics,
  79. chloral hydrate, chloramphenicol, chlorpropamide, cimetidine, clofibrate,
  80. danazol, disulfiram, erythromycin, glucagon, isoniazid, ketoconazole,
  81. methyldopa, methylphenidate, metronidazole, monoamine oxidase (MAO)
  82. inhibitors, nalidixic acid, phenylbutazone, propoxyphene, quinidine, quinine,
  83. salicylates, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim combination, sulfinpyrazone,
  84. sulfonamides, sulindac, tetracycline, thyroid hormones, and tolbutamide can
  85. increase the effects of warfarin, which can be dangerous.
  86.      2. Azathioprine, barbiturates, carbamazepine, cholestyramine, colestipol,
  87. estrogens, ethchlorvynol, griseofulvin, oral contraceptives (birth control
  88. pills), phenytoin, propylthiouracil, rifampin, sucralfate, and vitamin K can
  89. decrease the effectiveness of warfarin.
  90.      3. Adrenocorticosteroids (cortisone-like medications), anticancer drugs,
  91. aspirin, diflunisal, dipyridamole, fenoprofen, ibuprofen, indomethacin,
  92. oxyphenbutazone, phenylbutazone, potassium, quinidine, quinine, and
  93. salicylates can increase the bleeding complications of warfarin.
  94.      4. Warfarin can increase the side effects of oral antidiabetic agents and
  95. phenytoin.
  96.      5. Diuretics (water pills) may either increase the effects or decrease
  97. the effectiveness of warfarin.  Ask your doctor about concurrent use of
  98. diuretics and warfarin.
  99.      Before starting to take warfarin, BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any
  100. medications (both prescription and nonprescription) you are currently taking,
  101. especially any of those listed above.
  102.  
  103. WARNINGS
  104.  
  105.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  106. any medications, especially to warfarin.
  107.      * Before starting to take this medication, BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR if
  108. you now have or if you have ever had any condition for which bleeding is an
  109. added risk--an aneurysm, blood disorders, cancer, diabetes mellitus,
  110. congestive heart failure, edema, endocarditis, high blood pressure, indwelling
  111. catheters, intestinal infections, kidney or liver disease, malnutrition,
  112. menstrual difficulties, pericarditis, surgery, thyroid disease, tuberculosis,
  113. ulcers, vasculitis, or wounds and injuries.
  114.      * Before having surgery or any other medical or dental treatment, BE SURE
  115. TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR OR DENTIST THAT YOU ARE TAKING WARFARIN.
  116.      * Do not take any aspirin-containing products or any over-the-counter
  117. products while you are on warfarin, unless you first check with your doctor or
  118. pharmacist.  Aspirin can increase the risk of bleeding complications from
  119. warfarin.
  120.      * Avoid any activity, such as a contact sport, that might lead to
  121. physical injury.  Tell your doctor about any fall or blow that occurs.
  122. Warfarin can cause HEAVY bleeding from cuts.
  123.      * Use an electric razor while shaving to reduce the risk of cutting
  124. yourself, and be especially careful while brushing your teeth.
  125.      * Since factors such as travel, diet, the environment, and your health
  126. can affect your body's response to warfarin, your dosage level should be
  127. carefully monitored.
  128.      * Do not stop taking warfarin unless you first consult your doctor.  If
  129. you stop taking this drug abruptly, you may experience blood clotting.  Your
  130. doctor may, therefore, want to reduce your dosage gradually.
  131.      * Do not change brands of this medication without consulting your doctor.
  132.      * Some of these products contain the color additive FD&C Yellow No. 5
  133. (tartrazine), which can cause allergic-type reactions in certain susceptible
  134. individuals.
  135.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Warfarin has been
  136. associated with birth defects and bleeding complications in fetuses.  Also,
  137. tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.
