  36.      This medication should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed,
  37. light-resistant container.
  38.  
  39. USES
  40.  
  41.      Temazepam is prescribed to treat insomnia, including problems with
  42. falling asleep, waking during the night, and early morning wakefulness.  It is
  43. not clear exactly how this medicine works, but it may relieve insomnia by
  44. acting as a depressant of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord).
  45.  
  46. TREATMENT
  47.  
  48.      This medicine should be taken 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime.  It can be
  49. taken with food or a full glass of water if stomach upset occurs.  Do not take
  50. this medication with antacids, since they may retard its absorption from the
  51. gastrointestinal tract.
  52.      If you are taking this medication regularly and you miss a dose, take the
  53. missed dose immediately if you remember within an hour.  If more than an hour
  54. has passed, do not take the missed dose at all; just wait for the next
  55. scheduled dose.  Do not double the dose.
  56.  
  57. SIDE EFFECTS
  58.  
  59.      Minor.
  60.  
  61.      Bitter taste in the mouth, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness
  62. (after a night's sleep), dry mouth, excessive salivation, fatigue, flushing,
  63. headache, heartburn, loss of appetite, nausea, nervousness, sweating, or
  64. vomiting.  As your body adjusts to the medication, these side effects should
  65. disappear.
  66.      To relieve constipation, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (fresh
  67. fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads), exercise, and
  68. drink more water (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  69.      Dry mouth can be relieved by chewing sugarless gum or by sucking on ice
  70. chips.
  71.      If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down for a while; get up slowly from a
  72. sitting or reclining position, and be careful on stairs.
  73.

  76.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  77. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  78. blurred or double vision, chest pain, depression, difficulty in urinating,
  79. fainting, falling, fever, joint pain, hallucinations, mouth sores, nightmares,
  80. palpitations, rash, severe depression, shortness of breath, slurred speech,
  81. sore throat, uncoordinated movements, unusual excitement, unusual tiredness,
  82. or yellowing of the eyes or skin.

  84. INTERACTIONS
  85.  
  86.      Temazepam interacts with several other types of drugs:
  87.      1. To prevent oversedation, this drug should not be taken with alcohol,
  88. other sedative drugs, or central nervous system depressants (such as
  89. antihistamines, barbiturates, muscle relaxants, pain medications, narcotics,
  90. antiseizure medications, and phenothiazine tranquilizers) or with
  91. antidepressants.
  92.      2. Temazepam may decrease the effectiveness of carbamazepine, levodopa,
  93. and oral anticoagulants (blood thinners) and may increase the effects of
  94. phenytoin.
  95.      3. Disulfiram, cimetidine, oral contraceptives (birth control pills), and
  96. isoniazid may increase the blood levels of temazepam, which can lead to toxic
  97. effects.
  98.      4. Concurrent use of rifampin may decrease the effectiveness of
  99. temazepam.
  100.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  101. taking, especially those listed above.

  103. WARNINGS
  104.  
  105.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  106. any medications, especially to temazepam or other benzodiazepine tranquilizers
  107. (such as alprazolam, chlordiazepoxide, clorazepate, diazepam, flurazepam,
  108. halazepam, lorazepam, oxazepam, prazepam, and triazolam).
  109.      * Tell your doctor if you now have or if you have ever had liver disease,
  110. kidney disease, epilepsy, lung disease, myasthenia gravis, porphyria, mental
  111. depression, or mental illness.
  112.      * This medicine can cause drowsiness.  Avoid tasks that require
  113. alertness, such as driving a car.
  114.      * Temazepam has the potential for abuse and must be used with caution.
  115. Tolerance may develop quickly; do not increase the dosage without first
  116. consulting your doctor.  It is also important not to stop taking this drug
  117. suddenly if you have been taking it in large amounts or if you have used it
  118. for several weeks.  Your doctor may want to reduce the dosage gradually.
  119.      * This is a safe drug when used properly.  When it is combined with other
  120. sedative drugs or alcohol, however, serious side effects may develop.
  121.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  This type of medicine
  122. may increase the chance of birth defects if it is taken during the first three
  123. months of pregnancy.  In addition, use of this medicine during the last six
  124. months of pregnancy may result in addiction of the fetus, leading to
  125. withdrawal side effects in the newborn.  Also, use of this medicine during the
  126. last weeks of pregnancy may cause excessive drowsiness, slowed heartbeat, and
  127. breathing difficulties in the infant.  Tell your doctor if you are
  128. breast-feeding.  This medicine can pass into breast milk and cause unwanted
  129. side effects in nursing infants.
