  69.      Store this drug at room temperature in a tightly closed container.
  70.  
  71. USES
  72.  
  73.      This drug combination is used to relieve the symptoms of upper
  74. respiratory tract infections, hay fever and other allergies, and sinusitis
  75. (inflammation of the sinuses).
  76.      Phenylpropanolamine belongs to a group of drugs known as adrenergic
  77. agents (decongestants).  They act by constricting (narrowing) blood vessels in
  78. the nasal passages, thereby reducing swelling and congestion.
  79.      Chlorpheniramine belongs to a group of drugs known as antihistamines,
  80. which block the action of histamine, a chemical released by the body during an
  81. allergic reaction.  It is used to relieve or prevent symptoms of allergy.
  82.  
  83. TREATMENT
  84.  
  85.      In order to avoid stomach upset, you can take phenylpropanolamine and
  86. chlorpheniramine combination with food or with a full glass of milk or water
  87. (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  88.      The oral syrup form of this medication should be measured carefully with
  89. a specially designed 5-ml measuring spoon.
  90.      The sustained-release tablets and capsules should be swallowed whole.
  91. Breaking, chewing, or crushing these tablets or capsules destroys their
  92. sustained-release activity and may increase the side effects.
  93.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose as soon as
  94. possible, unless it is almost time for your next dose.  In that case, do not
  95. take the missed dose at all; just return to your regular dosing schedule.  Do
  96. not double the next dose.
  97.  
  98. SIDE EFFECTS
  99.  
  100.      Minor.
  101.  
  102.      Anxiety; blurred vision; constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness;
  103. dry mouth, nose, and throat; heartburn; insomnia; irritability; loss of
  104. appetite; nasal congestion; nausea; restlessness; decreased sweating;
  105. vomiting; or weakness.  These side effects should disappear as your body
  106. adjusts to the medication.
  107.      This medication can increase your sensitivity to sunlight.  Avoid
  108. prolonged exposure to sunlight and sunlamps, wear protective clothing, and use
  109. a sunscreen.
  110.      If you are constipated, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (fresh
  111. fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads), exercise, and
  112. drink more water (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  113.      Chew sugarless gum or suck on ice chips or a piece of hard candy to
  114. reduce mouth dryness.
  115.      If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down for a while; get up slowly from a
  116. sitting or reclining position, and be careful on stairs.
  117.      In order to avoid difficulty in falling asleep, take the last dose of
  118. this medication several hours before bedtime.
  119.  
  120.      Major.
  121.  
  122.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  123. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  124. chest pain, convulsions, difficult or painful urination, difficulty in
  125. breathing, fainting, hallucinations, headaches, loss of coordination,
  126. confusion, mood changes, nosebleeds, palpitations, rash, severe abdominal
  127. pain, sore throat, or unusual bleeding or bruising.
  128.  
  129. INTERACTIONS
  130.  
  131.      This drug interacts with several other types of drugs:
  132.      1. Concurrent use of it with central nervous system depressants (such as
  133. alcohol, barbiturates, benzodiazepine tranquilizers, muscle relaxants,
  134. narcotics, pain medications, and phenothiazine tranquilizers) or with
  135. tricyclic antidepressants can cause extreme drowsiness.
  136.      2. Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors (isocarboxazid, pargyline,
  137. phenelzine, or tranylcypromine and tricyclic antidepressants can increase the
  138. side effects of this medication.  At least 14 days should separate the use of
  139. this drug and the use of an MAO inhibitor.
  140.      3. The side effects of the antihistamine part of this medication may be
  141. increased by quinidine, procainamide, haloperidol, and phenothiazine
  142. tranquilizers; and the side effects of the decongestant component may be
  143. increased by digoxin or over-the-counter (nonprescription) diet, allergy,
  144. asthma, cough, cold, or sinus preparations.
  145.      4. The blood-pressure-lowering effects of guanethidine may be decreased
  146. by this medication.
  147.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  148. taking, especially any listed above.
  149.  
  150. WARNINGS
  151.  
  152.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  153. any medications, especially to chlorpheniramine or other antihistamines (such
  154. as azatadine, brompheniramine, carbinoxamine, clemastine, cyproheptadine,
  155. dexchlorpheniramine, dimenhydrinate, diphenhydramine, diphenylpyraline,
  156. doxylamine, hydroxyzine, promethazine, pyrilamine, trimeprazine,
  157. tripelennamine, and triprolidine) or to phenylpropanolamine or other
  158. adrenergic agents (such as albuterol, amphetamines, ephedrine, epinephrine,
  159. isoproterenol, metaproterenol, norepinephrine, pseudoephedrine, and
  160. terbutaline).
  161.      * Tell your doctor if you now have or if you have ever had diabetes
  162. mellitus, epilepsy, glaucoma, heart or blood vessel disease, hiatal hernia,
  163. high blood pressure, myasthenia gravis, obstructed bladder or intestinal
  164. tract, peptic ulcers, enlarged prostate gland, or thyroid disease.
  165.      * Because this drug can reduce sweating and heat release from the body,
  166. avoid excessive work or exercise in hot weather, and do not take hot baths,
  167. showers, or saunas.
  168.      * This medication can cause drowsiness.  Exercise caution when performing
  169. tasks that require alertness, such as driving a car or operating potentially
  170. dangerous machinery.  Be especially careful going up and down the stairs.
  171.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  The effects of this
  172. medication during pregnancy have not been thoroughly studied in humans.  Also,
  173. tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.  Small amounts of this
  174. medication pass into breast milk.
