  44. STORAGE
  45.  
  46.      Penicillin VK tablets should be stored at room temperature in a tightly
  47. closed container.  The oral solution should be stored in the refrigerator in a
  48. tightly closed container.  Any unused portion of the solution should be
  49. discarded after 14 days because the drug loses its potency after that time.
  50. This medication should never be frozen.
  51.  
  52. USES
  53.  
  54.      Penicillin VK is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections,
  55. including infections of the middle ear, the respiratory tract, and the urinary
  56. tract.  It acts by severely injuring the cell membranes of infecting bacteria,
  57. thereby preventing them from growing and multiplying.  Penicillin VK kills
  58. susceptible bacteria, but it is not effective against viruses, parasites, or
  59. fungi.

  61. TREATMENT
  62.  
  63.      Penicillin VK should be taken on an empty stomach or with a glass of
  64. water one hour before or two hours after a meal.  This medication should never
  65. be taken with fruit juices or carbonated beverages because the acidity of
  66. these drinks destroys the drug in the stomach.
  67.      The oral solution should be measured carefully with a specially designed
  68. 5-ml measuring spoon.  An ordinary kitchen teaspoon is not accurate enough.
  69.      Penicillin VK works best when the level of medicine in your bloodstream
  70. is kept constant.  It is best, therefore, to take the doses at evenly spaced
  71. intervals day and night.  For example, if you are taking four doses a day, the
  72. doses should be spaced six hours apart.
  73.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose immediately.
  74. However, if you do not remember to take the missed dose until it is almost
  75. time for the next dose, take it; space the following dose about halfway
  76. through the regular interval between doses; then return to your regular dosing
  77. schedule.  Try not to skip any doses.
  78.      It is important to continue to take this medication for the entire time
  79. prescribed by your doctor (usually seven to 14 days), even if the symptoms of
  80. infection disappear before the end of that period.  If you stop taking the
  81. drug too soon, resistant bacteria are given a chance to continue growing, and
  82. the infection could recur.

  84. SIDE EFFECTS
  85.  
  86.      Minor.
  87.  
  88.      Diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, or vomiting.  These side effects should
  89. disappear as your body adjusts to the drug.

  91.      Major.
  92.  
  93.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  94. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  95. bloating, chills, cough, darkened tongue, difficulty in breathing, fever,
  96. irritation of the mouth, muscle aches, rash, rectal or vaginal itching, severe
  97. diarrhea, or sore throat.  Also, if the infection seems to be getting worse
  98. rather than improving, you should contact your physician.

  100. INTERACTIONS
  101.  
  102.      Penicillin VK interacts with several other types of drugs:
  103.      1. Probenecid can increase the blood concentrations of this medication.
  104.      2. Oral neomycin may decrease the absorption of penicillin from the
  105. gastrointestinal tract.
  106.      3. Penicillin VK may decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives
  107. (birth control pills), and pregnancy could result.  You should, therefore, use
  108. a different or additional form of birth control while taking this medication.
  109. Discuss this with your doctor.
  110.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  111. taking, especially any of those listed above.

  113. WARNINGS
  114.  
  115.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  116. any medications, especially to penicillin or other penicillin antibiotics
  117. (such as ampicillin and amoxicillin), cephalosporin antibiotics,
  118. penicillamine, or griseofulvin.
  119.      * Tell your doctor if you now have or if you have ever had kidney
  120. disease, asthma, or allergies.
  121.      * This medication has been prescribed for your current infection only.
  122. Another infection later on, or one that someone else has, may require a
  123. different medicine.  You should not give your medicine to other people or use
  124. it for other infections, unless your doctor specifically directs you to do so.
  125.      * Diabetics taking penicillin should know that this drug can cause a
  126. false-positive sugar reaction with a Clinitest urine glucose test.  To avoid
  127. this problem while taking penicillin, you should switch to Clinistix or
  128. Tes-Tape to test your urine for sugar.
  129.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Although penicillin
  130. appears to be safe during pregnancy, extensive studies in humans have not been
  131. conducted.  Also, tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.  Small
  132. amounts of this medication pass into breast milk and may temporarily alter the
  133. bacterial balance in the intestinal tract of a nursing infant, resulting in
  134. diarrhea.
