  36.      This medication should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed,
  37. light-resistant container.
  38.  
  39. USES
  40.  
  41.      Oxazepam is prescribed to treat symptoms of anxiety and sometimes to
  42. treat anxiety associated with depression or alcohol withdrawal.  It is not
  43. clear exactly how this medicine works, but this medication may relieve anxiety
  44. by acting as a depressant of the central nervous system (brain and spinal
  45. cord).  Oxazepam is currently used by many people to relieve nervousness.
  46. This medication is very effective for this purpose when used for short
  47. periods, however it is important to attempt to remove the cause of the anxiety
  48. as well.

  50. TREATMENT
  51.  
  52.      This medication should be taken exactly as directed by your doctor.  It
  53. can be taken with food or a full glass of water if stomach upset occurs.  Do
  54. not take oxazepam with a dose of antacids, since they may slow its absorption.
  55.      If you are taking this drug regularly and you miss a dose, take the
  56. missed dose immediately if remembered within an hour.  If more than an hour
  57. has passed, skip the dose you missed and wait for the next scheduled dose.  Do
  58. not double the dose.
  59.  
  60. SIDE EFFECTS
  61.  
  62.      Minor.
  63.  
  64.      Bitter taste in the mouth, constipation, depression, diarrhea, dizziness,
  65. drowsiness (after a night's sleep), dry mouth, excessive salivation, fatigue,
  66. flushing, headache, heartburn, loss of appetite, nausea, nervousness,
  67. sweating, or vomiting.  These side effects should disappear as your body
  68. adjusts to the medication.
  69.      To relieve constipation, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (fresh
  70. fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads), exercise, and
  71. drink more water (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  72.      Dry mouth can be relieved by chewing sugarless gum or by sucking on ice
  73. chips.
  74.      If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down for a while; get up slowly from a
  75. sitting or reclining position, and be careful on stairs.

  79.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  80. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  81. blurred or double vision, chest pain, difficulty in urinating, fainting,
  82. falling, fever, hallucinations, joint pain, mouth sores, nightmares,
  83. palpitations, rash, severe depression, shortness of breath, slurred speech,
  84. sore throat, uncoordinated movements, unusual excitement, unusual tiredness,
  85. or yellowing of the eyes or skin.

  87. INTERACTIONS
  88.  
  89.      Oxazepam interacts with several other types of medications:
  90.      1. To prevent oversedation, this drug should not be taken with alcohol,
  91. other sedative drugs, or central nervous system depressants (such as
  92. antihistamines, barbiturates, muscle relaxants, pain medicines, narcotics,
  93. medicines for seizures, and phenothiazine tranquilizers) or with
  94. antidepressants.
  95.      2. This medication may decrease the effectiveness of carbamazepine,
  96. levodopa, and oral anticoagulants (blood thinners) and may increase the
  97. effects of phenytoin.
  98.      3. Disulfiram and isoniazid can increase the blood levels of oxazepam,
  99. which can lead to toxic effects.
  100.      4. Concurrent use of rifampin may decrease the effectiveness of oxazepam.
  101.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  102. taking, especially any listed above.
  103.  
  104. WARNINGS
  105.  
  106.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  107. any medications, especially to oxazepam or other benzodiazepine tranquilizers
  108. (such as alprazolam, chlordiazepoxide, clorazepate, diazepam, flurazepam,
  109. halazepam, lorazepam, midazolam, prazepam, temazepam, or triazolam).
  110.      * Tell your doctor if you have ever had kidney, liver, or lung disease;
  111. epilepsy; myasthenia gravis; porphyria; or mental illness or depression.
  112.      * This medicine can cause drowsiness.  Avoid tasks that require mental
  113. alertness, such as driving a car or using potentially dangerous machinery.
  114.      * Oxazepam has the potential for abuse and must be used with caution.
  115. Tolerance may develop quickly; do not increase the dosage without first
  116. consulting your doctor.  It is also important not to stop taking this drug
  117. suddenly if you have been taking it in large amounts, or if you have used it
  118. for several weeks.  Your doctor may want to reduce the dosage gradually.
  119.      * This is a safe drug when used properly.  When it is combined with other
  120. sedative drugs or alcohol, however, serious side effects can develop.
  121.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  This medicine may
  122. increase the chance of birth defects if it is taken during the first three
  123. months of pregnancy.  Too much use of this medicine during the last six months
  124. of pregnancy may cause the baby to become dependent on it.  Use of this
  125. medicine during the last weeks of pregnancy may cause unwanted side effects in
  126. the newborn.  Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding.  Oxazepam may pass
  127. into breast milk and cause unwanted side effects in the nursing infant.
