  33.  
  34.      Nalidixic acid tablets and suspension should be stored at room
  35. temperature in tightly closed containers.  This medication should never be
  36. frozen.

  38. USES
  39.  
  40.      Nalidixic acid is an antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial urinary
  41. tract infections.  It works by preventing the growth and multiplication of
  42. susceptible bacteria.  This medication is not effective against viruses,
  43. parasites, or fungi.
  44.  
  45. TREATMENT
  46.  
  47.      In order to avoid stomach irritation, you can take nalidixic acid with
  48. food or with a full glass of water or milk (unless your doctor directs you to
  49. do otherwise).
  50.      The suspension form of this medication should be shaken well just before
  51. measuring each dose.  The contents tend to settle on the bottom of the bottle,
  52. so it is necessary to shake the container to distribute the ingredients evenly
  53. and equalize the doses.  Each dose should then be measured carefully with a
  54. specially designed 5-ml measuring spoon.  An ordinary kitchen teaspoon is not
  55. accurate enough to ensure that you receive the proper dose.
  56.      Nalidixic acid works best when the level of medicine in your bloodstream
  57. and urine is kept constant.  It is best, therefore, to take the doses at
  58. evenly spaced intervals day and night.  For example, if you are to take four
  59. doses a day, the doses should be spaced six hours apart.
  60.      Try not to miss any doses of this medication.  If you do miss a dose,
  61. take it as soon as you remember.  However, if it is almost time for your next
  62. dose, take the missed dose immediately; space the following dose about halfway
  63. through the regular dosing interval; and then continue with your regular
  64. dosing schedule.
  65.      It is important to continue to take this medication for the entire time
  66. prescribed by your doctor (usually seven to 14 days), even if the symptoms
  67. disappear before the end of that period.  If you stop taking the drug too
  68. soon, resistant bacteria are given a chance to continue growing, and your
  69. infection could recur.
  70.  
  71. SIDE EFFECTS
  72.  
  73.      Minor.
  74.  
  75.      Abdominal pain, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea,
  76. vomiting, or weakness.  These side effects should disappear as your body
  77. adjusts to the medication.
  78.      This medication can increase your sensitivity to sunlight.  You should,
  79. therefore, avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and sunlamps.  Wear protective
  80. clothing and sunglasses, and use an effective sunscreen.
  81.      If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down for a while; get up slowly from a
  82. sitting or reclining position, and be careful on stairs.

  86.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  87. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  88. convulsions, itching, joint pain, skin rash, tingling sensations, unusual
  89. bleeding or bruising, visual disturbances, or yellowing of the eyes or skin.

  91. INTERACTIONS
  92.  
  93.      This drug can interact with several other types of drugs:
  94.      1. Nalidixic acid can increase the effects of oral anticoagulants, which
  95. can lead to bleeding complications.
  96.      2. Nitrofurantoin can reduce the effectiveness of this drug.
  97.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  98. taking, especially any listed above.
  99.  
  100. WARNINGS
  101.  
  102.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  103. any medications, especially to nalidixic acid or to cinoxacin or norfloxacin.
  104.      * Before starting to take this medication, be sure to tell your doctor if
  105. you now have or if you have ever had brain disorders, epilepsy, kidney
  106. disease, or liver disease.
  107.      * If this drug makes you dizzy or drowsy, do not take part in any
  108. activity that requires alertness, such as driving a car or operating
  109. potentially dangerous machinery.
  110.      * This drug has been prescribed for your current infection only.  Another
  111. infection later on, or one that someone else has, may require a different
  112. medicine.  You should not give your medication to other people or use it for
  113. other infections, unless your doctor specifically directs you to do so.
  114.      * Diabetic patients should know that nalidixic acid can cause
  115. false-positive readings of Clinitest urine glucose tests.  Temporarily
  116. changing to Clinistix or Tes-Tape urine glucose tests avoids this problem.
  117. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR before adjusting the dosage of your antidiabetic
  118. medication.
  119.      * If the symptoms of your infection do not improve within several days
  120. after starting this medication, CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR.  Nalidixic acid may
  121. not be effective against the organism causing your infection.
  122.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Although nalidixic
  123. acid may cross the placenta, it appears to be safe during pregnancy.  However,
  124. extensive studies in humans have not been conducted.  Also, tell your doctor
  125. if you are breast-feeding an infant.  Small amounts of nalidixic acid pass
  126. into breast milk.
