  35.      This medication should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed,
  36. light-resistant container.  Exposure to heat or moisture may cause this drug
  37. to break down.

  39. USES
  40.  
  41.      Lovastatin is used to treat hyperlipidemia (high blood fat levels).  It
  42. is prescribed in conjunction with nondrug therapies, such as diet modification
  43. and regular exercise, in an attempt to regulate lipid and cholesterol levels.
  44. Lovastatin chemically interferes with an enzyme in the body that is
  45. responsible for synthesizing cholesterol.  This decreases the LDL (low-density
  46. lipoprotein) type of cholesterol, which has been associated with coronary
  47. heart disease and atherosclerosis.

  49. TREATMENT
  50.  
  51.      This medication should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor.  If
  52. you are to take the drug once a day, it is best to take the drug in the
  53. evening.  Lovastatin can be taken with meals or a full glass of water if
  54. stomach upset occurs.
  55.      While using this medication, try to develop a set schedule for taking it.
  56. If you miss a dose and remember within a few hours, take the missed dose and
  57. resume your regular schedule.  If many hours have passed, skip the dose you
  58. missed and then take your next dose as scheduled.  Do not double the dose.

  60. SIDE EFFECTS
  61.  
  62.      Minor.
  63.  
  64.      Abdominal pain or cramps, constipation, diarrhea, gas, nausea, or stomach
  65. pain.  These effects may be relieved by taking lovastatin with a meal, adding
  66. fiber to your diet, or using mild stool softeners.
  67.  
  68.      Major.
  69.  
  70.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  71. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  72. blurred vision (or any other visual changes or difficulties) or muscle pain or
  73. tenderness, especially with malaise or fever.

  75. INTERACTIONS
  76.  
  77.      There do not appear to be any significant drug interactions with this
  78. medication.  However, you should make sure your doctor knows all the
  79. medications you are taking.

  81. WARNINGS
  82.  
  83.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  84. any medications.
  85.      * Tell your doctor if you have ever had liver disease, heart disease,
  86. stroke, or disorders of the digestive tract.
  87.      * In preliminary studies with lovastatin, some patients were found to
  88. develop eye-related problems during treatment.  Although these findings are
  89. inconclusive, and it has not yet been determined whether lovastatin is
  90. involved in such occurrences, it is advisable to have regular checkups with
  91. your ophthalmologist and inform him/her of your use of this drug.
  92.      * This drug should not be taken if you are pregnant or breast-feeding an
  93. infant.
