  34. STORAGE
  35.  
  36.      Loperamide capsules and liquid should be stored at room temperature in
  37. tightly closed containers.  This medication should never be frozen.
  38.  
  39. USES
  40.  
  41.      Loperamide is used to treat acute and chronic diarrhea and to reduce the
  42. volume of discharge in patients who have ileostomies.  It acts by slowing the
  43. movement of the gastrointestinal tract and decreasing the passage of water and
  44. other substances into the bowel.
  45.  
  46. TREATMENT
  47.  
  48.      In order to avoid stomach upset, you can take loperamide with food or
  49. with a full glass of water or milk.
  50.      If you miss a dose of this medication, do not take the missed dose at
  51. all; just return to your regular dosing schedule.  Do not double the next
  52. dose.
  53.  
  54. SIDE EFFECTS
  55.  
  56.      Minor.
  57.  
  58.      Constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, fatigue, loss of
  59. appetite, nausea, or vomiting.  These effects should disappear as your body
  60. adjusts to the drug.
  61.      To relieve constipation, exercise and drink more water (unless your
  62. doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  63.      To reduce mouth dryness, chew sugarless gum or suck on ice chips or a
  64. piece of hard candy.
  65.      If you feel dizzy or light-headed, sit or lie down for a while; get up
  66. from a sitting or lying position slowly, and be careful on stairs.

  68.      Major.

  70.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  71. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  72. abdominal bloating or pain, fever, rash, or sore throat.

  74. INTERACTIONS
  75.  
  76.      Loperamide should not interact with any other drugs.
  77.  
  78. WARNINGS
  79.  
  80.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  81. any medications.
  82.      * Tell your doctor if you now have or if you have ever had colitis,
  83. diarrhea caused by infectious organisms, drug-induced diarrhea, liver disease,
  84. dehydration, or conditions in which constipation must be avoided (such as
  85. hemorrhoids, diverticulitis, heart or blood vessel disorders, or blood
  86. clotting disorders).
  87.      * If this drug makes you dizzy or drowsy, do not take part in any
  88. activity that requires alertness.
  89.      * Before having surgery or any other medical or dental treatment, be sure
  90. to tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medication.
  91.      * Check with your doctor if your diarrhea does not subside within three
  92. days.  Unless your doctor prescribes otherwise, do not take this drug for more
  93. than ten days at a time.
  94.      * While taking this medication, drink lots of fluids to replace those
  95. lost because of diarrhea.
  96.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  The effects of this
  97. medication during pregnancy have not been thoroughly studied in humans.  Also,
  98. tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.  It is not known whether
  99. loperamide passes into breast milk.
