  39.      Lindane should be stored at room temperature in tightly closed
  40. containers.  This medication should never be frozen.
  41.  
  42. USES
  43.  
  44.      This medication is used to eliminate crab lice, head lice, and scabies.
  45. Lindane is a central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) stimulant, which
  46. causes convulsions and death of the parasites (at the dosage generally used,
  47. it is not harmful to humans).  Lindane cream and lotion are used to treat only
  48. scabies infestations.  Lindane shampoo is used to treat only lice
  49. infestations.

  51. TREATMENT
  52.  
  53.      Complete directions for the use of these products are supplied by the
  54. manufacturers.  Be sure to ask your doctor or pharmacist for these directions,
  55. and follow the instructions carefully.
  56.      If you are applying this medication to another person, you should wear
  57. plastic or rubber gloves on your hands in order to avoid absorption of this
  58. drug through the skin.
  59.      The lotion form of this medication should be shaken well before each dose
  60. is measured.  The contents of the lotion tend to settle on the bottom of the
  61. bottle, so the bottle must be shaken in order to distribute the medication
  62. evenly and equalize the doses.
  63.      Be sure to rinse off this product according to the directions.  If it is
  64. not rinsed off COMPLETELY, too much of the medication will be absorbed.

  66. SIDE EFFECTS
  67.  
  68.      Minor.

  70.      Rash or skin irritation upon application.

  72.      Major.

  74.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  75. particularly bothersome.  The serious side effects associated with this
  76. medication (clumsiness, convulsions, irritability, muscle cramps,
  77. palpitations, restlessness, unsteadiness, unusual nervousness, or vomiting)
  78. are due to absorption of this drug through the skin.  This should not happen
  79. if the product is used according to directions.  CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR if you
  80. experience any of these symptoms.

  82. INTERACTIONS
  83.  
  84.      Do not use other skin preparations (lotions, ointments, or oils).  They
  85. increase the absorption of this product through the skin, which can lead to
  86. serious side effects.
  87.  
  88. WARNINGS
  89.  
  90.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  91. any medications, especially to lindane.
  92.      * This product should NOT be used on the face.  If you do get lindane in
  93. your eyes, it should be flushed out immediately.  In order to decrease the
  94. amount of drug absorbed through the skin, avoid using this product on any open
  95. wounds, cuts, or sores.
  96.      * Lice are easily transmitted from one person to another.  All family
  97. members (and sexual partners) should be carefully examined.  Personal items
  98. (clothing, towels) should be machine-washed using the "hot" temperature cycle
  99. and then dried.  No unusual cleaning measures are required.  Combs, brushes,
  100. and other washable items may be soaked in boiling water for one hour.
  101.      * After using the shampoo for head lice, you must remove the dead nits
  102. (eggs).  Use a fine-tooth comb to remove them from your hair, or mix a
  103. solution of equal parts of water and vinegar and apply it to the affected
  104. area.  Rub the solution in well.  After several minutes, shampoo with your
  105. regular shampoo and then brush your hair.  This process should remove all
  106. nits.
  107.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Lindane is absorbed
  108. through the skin and may cause central nervous system side effects in the
  109. mother and in the developing fetus.  Also, tell your doctor if you are
  110. breast-feeding an infant.  Lindane probably passes into breast milk and may
  111. cause central nervous system side effects in nursing infants.
