  34.      Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container.
  35.  
  36. USES
  37.  
  38.      Ketoprofen is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
  39. Ketoprofen has been shown to block the production of certain body chemicals,
  40. called prostaglandins, that trigger pain and inflammation.  However, it is not
  41. yet fully understood how ketoprofen works.
  42.  
  43. TREATMENT
  44.  
  45.      Ketoprofen should be taken immediately after meals or with food in order
  46. to reduce stomach irritation.  Check with your doctor about taking ketoprofen
  47. with an antacid.
  48.      Take ketoprofen on schedule and try not to miss any doses.  If you do
  49. miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as possible, unless it is almost
  50. time for the next dose.  In that case, do not take the missed dose at all;
  51. just return to your regular dosing schedule.  Do not double the next dose.
  52.      Ketoprofen does not cure arthritis, but it will help to control symptoms
  53. as long as you take the drug.
  54.  
  55. SIDE EFFECTS
  56.  
  57.      Minor.
  58.  
  59.      Abdominal pain, changes in taste, constipation, decreased or increased
  60. appetite, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, excessive salivation,
  61. fatigue, flushing, gas, headache, heartburn, increased heart rate, increased
  62. thirst, nausea, nosebleeds, sweating, vomiting, or weight change.  These side
  63. effects should disappear as your body adjusts to this medication.
  64.      Ketoprofen may cause increased sensitivity to sunlight.  It is,
  65. therefore, important to avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and sunlamps.
  66. Wear protective clothing and sunglasses, and use an effective sunscreen.
  67.      To relieve constipation, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (fresh
  68. fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads), exercise, and
  69. drink more water (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  70.      If you become dizzy, sit or lie down; get up slowly from a sitting or
  71. reclining position, and be careful on stairs.
  72.

  75.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  76. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  77. black or tarry stools, chills, confusion, decreased or painful urination, hair
  78. loss, itching, memory loss, mouth sores, muscle pains, palpitations, rash,
  79. shortness of breath, swelling of the feet, tingling in the fingers or toes,
  80. unusual bleeding or bruising, unusual weight gain, visual disturbances, or
  81. yellowing of the eyes or skin.

  83. INTERACTIONS
  84.  
  85.      Ketoprofen interacts with several other types of medications:
  86.      1. Ketoprofen can increase the risk of bleeding complications with
  87. anticoagulants (blood thinners, such as warfarin).
  88.      2. Ketoprofen can interfere with the diuretic effects of furosemide and
  89. thiazidetype diuretics (water pills).
  90.      3. Aspirin can alter the blood levels and elimination of ketoprofen from
  91. the body.
  92.      4. Probenecid can increase the blood levels of ketoprofen, which can lead
  93. to an increased chance of side effects.
  94.      5. The action of beta blockers may be affected by this drug.
  95.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  96. taking, especially those listed above.
  97.  
  98. WARNINGS
  99.  
  100.      * Tell your doctor about any unusual or allergic reactions you have had
  101. to any medications, especially to ketoprofen or to any other chemically
  102. related drugs, including aspirin, other salicylates, diclofenac, diflunisal,
  103. fenoprofen, flurbiprofen, ibuprofen, indomethacin, meclofenamate, mefenamic
  104. acid, naproxen, oxyphenbutazone, phenylbutazone, piroxicam, sulindac, or
  105. tolmetin.
  106.      * Before taking ketoprofen, tell your doctor if you now have or if you
  107. have ever had anemia, bleeding problems, gastrointestinal diseases, heart
  108. failure, hypertension, kidney disease, liver disease, or ulcers.
  109.      * If ketoprofen makes you dizzy or drowsy, do not take part in any
  110. activity that requires alertness, such as driving a car or operating
  111. potentially dangerous machinery.
  112.      * If vision problems develop while taking this medication, your doctor
  113. may refer you to an ophthalmologist.
  114.      * Stomach problems are more likely to occur if you take aspirin regularly
  115. or drink alcohol while being treated with this medication.
  116.      * Before having surgery or any other medical or dental treatment, be sure
  117. to tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medication.  Your
  118. doctor or dentist may recommend stopping ketoprofen for several days prior to
  119. surgery, to decrease the risk of bleeding complications.
  120.      * The elderly may be at increased risk of experiencing some of the side
  121. effects of this medication.
  122.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Although ketoprofen
  123. appears to be safe in animals, studies in pregnant women have not been
  124. conducted.  Ketoprofen should be avoided late in pregnancy because it can
  125. alter fetal heart circulation.  Also tell your doctor if you are
  126. breast-feeding an infant.  It is not yet known whether ketoprofen passes into
  127. human breast milk.
