  34.      Isotretinoin should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed,
  35. light-resistant container.

  37. USES
  38.  
  39.      This medication is used to treat severe cystic acne.  It is not clearly
  40. understood how isotretinoin works, but it decreases the production of sebum (a
  41. skin oil) and dries up the acne lesions.
  42.  
  43. TREATMENT
  44.  
  45.      An information leaflet is packaged with this product.  Be sure to read it
  46. carefully.
  47.      Isotretinoin should be taken with meals to obtain maximum benefit.
  48.      It may take one to two months before the maximum effects of this
  49. medication are observed.
  50.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose as soon as
  51. possible, and then return to your regular dosing schedule.  However, if you do
  52. not remember until it is time for your next dose, double the next dose, and
  53. then return to your regular dosing schedule.

  55. SIDE EFFECTS
  56.  
  57.      Minor.
  58.  
  59.      Changes in skin color, drowsiness, dry lips or mouth, fatigue, fluid
  60. retention, headache, indigestion, inflammation of the eyelids, inflammation of
  61. the lips, irritation of the eyes, or thinning of the hair.  These side effects
  62. may disappear as your body adjusts to the medication.
  63.      You may notice a worsening of your acne for the first few days of
  64. treatment.
  65.      This medication can cause increased sensitivity to sunlight.  Therefore,
  66. avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and sunlamps.  You should wear protective
  67. clothing and sunglasses, and also use an effective sunscreen.
  68.      To relieve mouth dryness, chew sugarless gum or suck on ice chips or a
  69. piece of hard candy.  If there is no relief within two weeks, consult your
  70. doctor.

  74.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  75. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  76. black, tarry stools; bruising; burning or tingling sensation of the skin;
  77. changes in the menstrual cycle; depression; dizziness; hives; muscle pain;
  78. peeling of the palms and soles; rash; visual disturbances; or weight loss.

  80. INTERACTIONS
  81.  
  82.      This medication interacts with the following substances:
  83.      1. The concurrent use of alcohol and isotretinoin can lead to an increase
  84. in blood lipid (fat) levels, which can be dangerous.
  85.      2. Vitamin A and isotretinoin together can result in additive toxic
  86. effects.
  87.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  88. taking, especially vitamin A.
  89.  
  90. WARNINGS
  91.  
  92.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  93. any medications, especially to isotretinoin, vitamin A, or the preservative
  94. parabens.
  95.      * Before starting to take this medication, tell your doctor if you now
  96. have or if you have ever had diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes) or
  97. hyperlipidemia (high blood lipid levels).
  98.      * If this drug makes you drowsy, do not take part in any activity that
  99. requires alertness, such as driving a car or operating potentially dangerous
  100. machinery.
  101.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Isotretinoin has been
  102. shown to cause birth defects in humans.  An effective form of birth control
  103. should be used by women of child-bearing age while they are taking this drug
  104. and for at least one month before and after they stop taking it.  Within two
  105. weeks of starting this drug, women should have a blood pregnancy test.  If the
  106. test is negative, the drug will be started on the second or third day of the
  107. next normal menstrual period.  Women should have a pregnancy test each month
  108. while they take this medication.  All women must also sign an informed-consent
  109. sheet.  Also, tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.  It is not
  110. known whether this drug passes into breast milk.
