  34.      Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container.

  36. USES
  37.  
  38.      Ipecac is for emergency use to treat drug overdose or poisoning.  Ipecac
  39. works on the stomach and on the vomiting center in the brain to produce
  40. vomiting.
  41.  
  42. TREATMENT
  43.  
  44.      Before administering ipecac, call a poison control center, emergency
  45. room, or physician for advice.  You must administer ipecac with adequate
  46. amounts of water (1/2 glass for infants less than 1 year old; 1 to 2 glasses
  47. for children and adults) for adequate fluid in the stomach.  If vomiting does
  48. not occur within 20 minutes after a second dose has been given, call again
  49. IMMEDIATELY for instructions.

  51. SIDE EFFECTS
  52.  
  53.      Minor.
  54.  
  55.      Ipecac can cause diarrhea, drowsiness, nausea, or vomiting that continues
  56. for more than 30 minutes.  These side effects should disappear within several
  57. hours.
  58.  
  59.      Major.
  60.  
  61.      Be sure to tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  62. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  63. aching or stiffness of the muscles, difficulty in breathing, palpitations,
  64. stomach cramps or pain, or weakness as soon as possible.

  66. INTERACTIONS
  67.  
  68.      Ipecac oral syrup should not be administered with milk or with carbonated
  69. beverages; these fluids may affect how quickly ipecac works.  Activated
  70. charcoal absorbs ipecac.  If both activated charcoal and ipecac oral syrup are
  71. to be used, give the activated charcoal only after successful vomiting has
  72. been produced by the ipecac.

  74. WARNINGS
  75.  
  76.      * Vomiting is not the proper treatment in all cases of possible
  77. poisoning; ipecac should NOT be used if gasoline, oils, kerosene, acids,
  78. alkalies (lye), corrosives, or strychnine has been swallowed, since vomiting
  79. of these substances may cause seizures, additional throat burns, or pneumonia.
  80.      * Ipecac should probably not be used if the poisoned patient is losing
  81. consciousness, has no gag reflex, is in shock, is having seizures, or has
  82. heart disease unless directed by a health professional.
  83.      * Muscle and heart disorders and at least one death have been reported as
  84. a result of the chronic use of ipecac by young women who were using it to
  85. induce vomiting.
  86.      * Ipecac is available over-the-counter (nonprescription) and can be
  87. purchased from most pharmacies.  Mothers should have a one-ounce bottle of
  88. ipecac for each child in the house.  Always call a poison control center,
  89. emergency room, or physician for instructions BEFORE administering ipecac.
  90.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if the overdose or poisoning victim is
  91. pregnant.  Although ipecac appears to be safe, studies in pregnant women have
  92. not been done.
