  48.      The rectal cream should be stored at room temperature (never frozen) in a
  49. tightly closed container.  The rectal suppositories should be stored in a
  50. cool, dry place or in the refrigerator.
  51.  
  52. USES
  53.  
  54.      This combination medication is used to relieve the pain, itching, and
  55. discomfort arising from hemorrhoids and irritated anorectal tissues.
  56.      Your adrenal glands naturally produce certain cortisone-like chemicals.
  57. These chemicals are involved in various regulatory processes in the body (such
  58. as those involving fluid balance, temperature, and reaction to inflammation).
  59. Hydrocortisone belongs to a group of drugs known as adrenocorticosteroids (or
  60. cortisone-like drugs).  Hydrocortisone is used to relieve inflammation
  61. (redness, swelling, itching, and discomfort).  Zinc oxide is an astringent
  62. that causes shrinking and provides relief of irritation.  The other
  63. ingredients provide a drying and softening effect.
  64.  
  65. TREATMENT
  66.  
  67.      Wash your hands before applying this medication.  To apply the rectal
  68. cream, first wash and dry the rectal area and then gently rub in a small
  69. amount of the cream.  If you must insert the cream inside the rectum, attach
  70. the applicator tip to the opened tube.  It may be helpful to lubricate the
  71. applicator with a small amount of petroleum jelly to ease insertion.  Insert
  72. the applicator tip into the rectum and squeeze the tube.  Remove the
  73. applicator from the tube and wash it with hot water and soap; then thoroughly
  74. dry it before storing.  Be sure to put the top back on the tube.  Wash your
  75. hands again after application.
  76.      To insert the suppository, unwrap the suppository and moisten it slightly
  77. with water (if the suppository is too soft to insert, run cold water over it
  78. or refrigerate it for up to 30 minutes before you unwrap it).  Lie down on
  79. your left side with your right knee bent.  Push the suppository well into the
  80. rectum with your finger.  Try not to have a bowel movement for at least an
  81. hour.  Wash your hands again after application.
  82.      If you miss a dose of this medication, apply the cream or insert the
  83. suppository as soon as possible, unless it is almost time for the next
  84. application.  In that case, do not use the missed dose at all; just wait until
  85. the next scheduled dose.

  87. SIDE EFFECTS
  88.  
  89.      Minor.
  90.  
  91.      Burning sensation upon application.  The burning should disappear as your
  92. body adjusts to the medication.
  93.  
  94.      Major.
  95.  
  96.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  97. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  98. any additional inflammation or infection at the site of application, as well
  99. as rectal pain, bleeding, leakage, itching, or blistering.

  101. INTERACTIONS
  102.  
  103.      This medication should not interact with any other medications as long as
  104. it is used according to the directions given to you by the doctor or
  105. pharmacist.
  106.  
  107. WARNINGS
  108.  
  109.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  110. medications, especially to benzyl benzoate, bismuth resorcin compound, bismuth
  111. subgallate, Peruvian balsam, or to hydrocortisone or any other
  112. adrenocorticosteroid (such as amcinonide, betamethasone, clocortolone,
  113. cortisone, desonide, desoximetasone, dexamethasone, diflorasone, flumethasone,
  114. fluocinolone, fluocinonide, fluorometholone, flurandrenolide, halcinonide,
  115. methylprednisolone, paramethasone, prednisolone, prednisone, and
  116. triamcinolone).
  117.      * If additional irritation develops while using this drug, immediately
  118. discontinue its use and notify your doctor.
  119.      * You should not use this medication for more than seven consecutive days
  120. unless your doctor specifically directs you to do so.
  121.      * If this drug stains your clothing, the stain may be removed by washing
  122. with laundry detergent.
  123.      * Wearing a sanitary napkin may help to protect clothing and to keep the
  124. medication in the area.
  125.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  If large amounts of
  126. hydrocortisone are applied for prolonged periods, some of it will be absorbed
  127. and may cross the placenta.  Studies in humans have not been conducted, but
  128. birth defects have been observed in the offspring of animals that were given
  129. large oral doses of hydrocortisone during pregnancy.  Also, tell your doctor
  130. if you are breast-feeding an infant.  If absorbed through the skin, small
  131. amounts of hydrocortisone pass into breast milk and may cause growth
  132. suppression or a decrease in natural adrenocorticosteroid hormone production
  133. in the nursing infant.
