  35.      Glutethimide tablets and capsules should be stored at room temperature in
  36. tightly closed containers.

  38. USES
  39.  
  40.      This medication is used for short-term treatment of insomnia.  It is not
  41. clearly understood how glutethimide works to produce sleep, but it is a
  42. central nervous system depressant (a drug that slows the activity of the brain
  43. and spinal cord).  This drug loses its effectiveness in producing and
  44. maintaining sleep after three to seven days of continuous treatment.

  46. TREATMENT
  47.  
  48.      You can take glutethimide tablets or capsules either on an empty stomach
  49. or, to avoid stomach irritation, with food or milk (unless your doctor directs
  50. you to do otherwise).  The dose should be taken 15 to 30 minutes before
  51. bedtime.
  52.  
  53. SIDE EFFECTS
  54.  
  55.      Minor.
  56.  
  57.      Drowsiness during the daytime; dizziness; a "hangover" feeling; headache;
  58. nausea; and vomiting.  These side effects should disappear as your body
  59. adjusts to the medication.
  60.      If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down awhile; change positions slowly, and
  61. be careful on stairs.

  65.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  66. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  67. blurred vision; clumsiness; confusion; convulsions; difficulty breathing;
  68. fever; hallucinations; muscle cramps; nightmares; skin rash; slurred speech;
  69. sore throat; trembling; unusual bleeding or bruising; or unusual weakness.

  71. INTERACTIONS
  72.  
  73.      Glutethimide interacts with a number of other medications.
  74.      1. Concurrent use of it with other central nervous system depressants
  75. (such as alcohol, antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepine tranquilizers,
  76. muscle relaxants, narcotics, pain medications, phenothiazine tranquilizers,
  77. and other sleeping medications) or with tricyclic anti-depressants can lead to
  78. extreme drowsiness, and can be dangerous.
  79.      2. Glutethimide can decrease the blood levels and effectiveness of oral
  80. anti-coagulants (blood thinners, such as warfarin).
  81.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR if you are already taking any of the
  82. medications listed above.

  84. WARNINGS
  85.  
  86.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  87. any medications, especially to glutethimide.
  88.      * Before starting to take this medication, be sure to tell your doctor if
  89. you now have, or if you have ever had, glaucoma; heart arrhythmias; kidney
  90. disease; severe pain; peptic ulcers; enlarged prostate gland; porphyria; or
  91. blockage of the intestines or urinary tract.
  92.      * If this medication makes you drowsy or dizzy, or blurs your vision, do
  93. not take part in any activity that requires alertness, such as driving a car.
  94.      * This medication has the potential for abuse.  Therefore, it should not
  95. be used in higher doses or for longer periods than recommended by your doctor.
  96. If you have been taking glutethimide for longer than several weeks, check with
  97. your doctor before discontinuing it.  Stopping abruptly can lead to a
  98. withdrawal reaction.  Your doctor may want to reduce the dosage gradually to
  99. prevent this reaction.
  100.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Extensive studies in
  101. pregnant women using glutethimide have not yet been completed.  However, it is
  102. known that large amounts of the drug taken during the last three months of
  103. pregnancy can cause the baby to become dependent on the medication, leading to
  104. withdrawal side effects at birth.  Also, tell your doctor if you are
  105. breastfeeding an infant.  Small amounts of glutethimide pass into breast milk
  106. and can cause extreme drowsiness in the nursing infant.
