  39. STORAGE
  40.  
  41.      Fluocinonide ointment, cream, gel, and solution should be stored at room
  42. temperature in tightly closed containers.  This medication should never be
  43. frozen.
  44.  
  45. USES
  46.  
  47.      Your adrenal glands naturally produce certain cortisone-like chemicals.
  48. These chemicals are involved in various regulatory processes in the body (such
  49. as those involving fluid balance, temperature, and reaction to inflammation).
  50. Fluocinonide belongs to a group of drugs known as adrenocorticosteroids (or
  51. cortisone-like medications).  It is used to relieve the skin inflammation
  52. (redness, swelling, itching, and discomfort) associated with conditions such
  53. as dermatitis, eczema, and poison ivy.  How this drug works is not completely
  54. understood.
  55.  
  56. TREATMENT
  57.  
  58.      Before applying this medication, wash your hands.  Then, unless your
  59. doctor gives you different instructions, gently wash the area of the skin
  60. where the medication is to be applied.  With a clean towel, pat the area
  61. almost dry; it should be slightly damp when you put the medicine on.
  62.      Apply a small amount of fluocinonide to the affected area in a thin
  63. layer.  Do not bandage the area unless your doctor tells you to do so.  If you
  64. are to apply an occlusive dressing (like kitchen plastic wrap), be sure you
  65. understand the instructions.  Wash your hands again after application.
  66.      If you miss a dose of this medication, apply the missed dose as soon as
  67. possible, unless it is almost time for the next application.  In that case, do
  68. not apply the missed dose at all; just return to your regular schedule.  Do
  69. not double the next dose.
  70.  
  71. SIDE EFFECTS
  72.  
  73.      Minor.
  74.  
  75.      Acne, burning sensation, itching, rash, or dry skin.
  76.      If the affected area is extremely dry or scaling, the skin may be
  77. moistened before applying the medication by soaking in water or by applying
  78. water with a clean cloth.  The ointment form is probably better for dry skin.
  79.      A mild, temporary stinging sensation may occur after this medication is
  80. applied.  If this persists, contact your doctor.

  83.  
  84.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  85. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  86. blistering, increased hair growth, irritation of the affected area, loss of
  87. skin color, secondary infection in the area being treated, or thinning of the
  88. skin with easy bruising.

  90. INTERACTIONS
  91.  
  92.      This medication should not interact with any other medications as long as
  93. it is used according to directions.
  94.  
  95. WARNINGS
  96.  
  97.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  98. any medications, especially to fluocinonide or any other adrenocorticosteroid
  99. (such as amcinonide, betamethasone, clocortolone, cortisone, desonide,
  100. desoximetasone, dexamethasone, diflorasone, flumethasone, fluocinolone,
  101. fluorometholone, flurandrenolide, halcinonide, hydrocortisone,
  102. methylprednisolone, paramethasone, prednisolone, prednisone, and
  103. triamcinolone).
  104.      * Tell your doctor if you now have or if you have ever had blood vessel
  105. disease, chicken pox, diabetes mellitus, fungal infection, peptic ulcers,
  106. shingles, tuberculosis, tuberculosis of the skin, vaccinia, or any other type
  107. of infection, especially at the site currently being treated.
  108.      * If any type of irritation develops while using this drug, you should
  109. immediately discontinue use of the medication and notify your doctor.
  110.      * Fluocinonide is a topical medication.  It is meant for use on the skin
  111. only.  This product is not for use in the eyes, nose, or mouth; contact may
  112. result in side effects.
  113.      * Do not use this product with an occlusive wrap unless your doctor
  114. directs you to do so.  Systemic absorption of this drug is increased if large
  115. areas of the body are treated, particularly if occlusive bandages are used.
  116. If it is necessary for you to use this drug under a wrap, follow your doctor's
  117. instructions exactly; do not leave the wrap in place longer than specified.
  118.      * If you are using fluocinonide on a child's diaper area, do not put
  119. tight-fitting diapers or plastic pants on the child.  This may lead to
  120. increased systemic absorption of the drug and a possible increase in side
  121. effects.
  122.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  If large amounts of
  123. this drug are applied for prolonged periods, some of it will be absorbed and
  124. may cross the placenta.  Although studies in humans have not been conducted,
  125. birth defects have been observed in the offspring of animals that were given
  126. large oral doses of this type of drug during pregnancy.  Also, tell your
  127. doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.  If absorbed through the skin,
  128. small amounts of fluocinonide pass into breast milk and may cause growth
  129. suppression or a decrease in natural adrenocorticosteroid hormone production
  130. in the nursing infant.
