  35. STORAGE
  36.  
  37.      Doxepin capsules and oral concentrate should be stored at room
  38. temperature in tightly closed containers.  This medication should never be
  39. frozen.
  40.  
  41. USES
  42.  
  43.      Doxepin is used to relieve the symptoms of mental depression.  This
  44. medication belongs to a group of drugs referred to as the tricyclic
  45. antidepressants.  These medicines are thought to relieve depression by
  46. increasing the concentration of certain chemicals necessary for nerve
  47. transmission in the brain.
  48.  
  49. TREATMENT
  50.  
  51.      This medication should be taken exactly as your doctor prescribes.  You
  52. can take it with food to lessen the chance of stomach irritation (unless your
  53. doctor tells you to do otherwise).
  54.      Each dose of the oral concentrate should be diluted in at least four
  55. ounces (half a glass) of water, milk, or fruit juice just prior to
  56. administration.  Measure the correct amount carefully with the dropper
  57. provided.  DO NOT mix the medication with grape juice or with carbonated
  58. beverages, since they may decrease the medicine's effectiveness.
  59.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose as soon as
  60. possible, then return to your regular dosing schedule.  If, however, the dose
  61. you missed was a once-a-day bedtime dose, do not take that dose in the
  62. morning; check with your doctor instead.  If the dose is taken in the morning,
  63. it may cause some unwanted side effects.  Never double the dose.
  64.      The antidepressant effects of therapy with this medication may not become
  65. apparent for two or three weeks.
  66.  
  67. SIDE EFFECTS
  68.  
  69.      Minor.
  70.  
  71.      Blurred vision, constipation, cramps, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness,
  72. dry mouth, fatigue, indigestion, insomnia, loss of appetite, nausea, peculiar
  73. tastes in the mouth, restlessness, sweating, vomiting, weakness, or weight
  74. gain or loss.  As your body adjusts to the medication, these side effects
  75. should disappear.
  76.      This drug may cause increased sensitivity to sunlight.  Therefore, avoid
  77. prolonged exposure to sunlight and sunlamps.  Wear protective clothing and use
  78. an effective sunscreen.
  79.      Dry mouth can be relieved by chewing sugarless gum or by sucking on ice
  80. chips or a piece of hard candy.
  81.      To relieve constipation, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (fresh
  82. fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads), exercise, and
  83. drink more water (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  84.      To avoid dizziness or light-headedness when you stand, contract and relax
  85. the muscles of your legs for a few moments before rising.  Do this by pushing
  86. one foot against the floor while raising the other foot slightly, alternating
  87. feet so that you are "pumping" your legs in a pedaling motion.

  89.      Major.

  91.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  92. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  93. agitation, anxiety, chest pain, confusion, convulsions, difficulty in
  94. urinating, enlarged or painful breasts (in both sexes), fainting, fever, fluid
  95. retention, hair loss, hallucinations, headaches, impotence, mood changes,
  96. mouth sores, nervousness, nightmares, numbness in the fingers or toes,
  97. palpitations, ringing in the ears, seizures, skin rash, sleep disorders, sore
  98. throat, a tendency to bleed or bruise, tremors, uncoordinated movements or
  99. balance problems, or yellowing of the eyes or skin.

  101. INTERACTIONS
  102.  
  103.      Doxepin interacts with a number of other types of medications:
  104.      1. Extreme drowsiness can occur when this medicine is taken with central
  105. nervous system depressants (such as alcohol, antihistamines, barbiturates,
  106. benzodiazepine tranquilizers, muscle relaxants, narcotics, pain medications,
  107. phenothiazine tranquilizers, and sleeping medications) or with other
  108. antidepressants.
  109.      2. Doxepin may decrease the effectiveness of antiseizure medications and
  110. may block the blood-pressure-lowering effects of clonidine and guanethidine.
  111.      3. Oral contraceptives (birth control pills) and estrogen-containing
  112. drugs can increase the side effects and reduce the effectiveness of the
  113. tricyclic antidepressants (including doxepin).
  114.      4. Cimetidine can decrease the elimination of doxepin from the body,
  115. which can increase the possibility that side effects will occur.
  116.      5. Tricyclic antidepressants may increase the side effects of thyroid
  117. medications and over-the-counter (nonprescription) cough, cold, allergy,
  118. asthma, sinus, and diet medications.
  119.      6. The concurrent use of this drug and monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors
  120. should be avoided, because the combination may result in fever, convulsions,
  121. or high blood pressure.  At least 14 days should separate the use of this drug
  122. and the use of an MAO inhibitor.
  123.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  124. taking, especially any of those listed above.

  126. WARNINGS
  127.  
  128.      * Tell your doctor if you have had unusual or allergic reactions to any
  129. medications, especially to doxepin or any of the other tricyclic
  130. antidepressants (amitriptyline, imipramine, trimipramine, amoxapine,
  131. protriptyline, desipramine, maprotiline, and nortriptyline).
  132.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you have a history of alcoholism or if
  133. you have ever had asthma, high blood pressure, liver or kidney disease, heart
  134. disease, a heart attack, circulatory disease, stomach problems, intestinal
  135. problems, difficulty in urinating, enlarged prostate gland, epilepsy,
  136. glaucoma, thyroid disease, mental illness, or electroshock therapy.
  137.      * If this drug makes you dizzy or drowsy, do not take part in any
  138. activity that requires alertness, such as driving a car or operating
  139. potentially dangerous equipment.
  140.      * Before having surgery or any other medical or dental treatment, be sure
  141. to tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medication.
  142.      * Do not stop taking this drug suddenly.  Abruptly stopping it can cause
  143. nausea, headache, stomach upset, fatigue, or a worsening of your condition.
  144. Your doctor may want to reduce the dosage gradually.
  145.      * The effects of this medication may last as long as seven days after you
  146. have stopped taking it, so continue to observe all precautions during that
  147. period.
  148.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  The effects of this
  149. drug during pregnancy have not been thoroughly studied in humans.  Studies in
  150. animals have shown that this medication can cause side effects to the fetus if
  151. given to the mother in large doses during pregnancy.  Also, tell your doctor
  152. if you are breast-feeding an infant.  Small amounts of this drug can pass into
  153. breast milk and may cause unwanted effects in the nursing infant.
