  38.      Disopyramide capsules should be stored at room temperature in tightly
  39. closed containers.
  40.  
  41. USES
  42.  
  43.      Disopyramide is used for the treatment of heart arrhythmias.  It corrects
  44. irregular heartbeats and helps to achieve a more normal rhythm.
  45.  
  46. TREATMENT
  47.  
  48.      Disopyramide can be taken with or without food.  Check with your doctor
  49. for a recommendation.
  50.      Try to take disopyramide at the same time(s) each day.  This medication
  51. works best if the amount of the drug in your bloodstream is kept at a constant
  52. level.  It is best, therefore, to take this medication at evenly spaced
  53. intervals day and night.  For example, if you are to take it three times per
  54. day, the doses should be spaced eight hours apart.
  55.      Try not to miss any doses of this medication.  If you do miss a dose and
  56. remember within two hours, take the missed dose as soon as possible.  If more
  57. than two hours have passed, do not take the missed dose; just wait for your
  58. next scheduled dose.  Do not double the next dose.

  60. SIDE EFFECTS
  61.  
  62.      Minor.
  63.  
  64.      Abdominal pain; aches and pain; blurred vision; constipation; decreased
  65. sweating; diarrhea; dizziness; dry mouth, eyes, and throat; fatigue; gas;
  66. headache; impotence; loss of appetite; nausea; nervousness; or vomiting.
  67. These side effects should disappear as you adjust to the drug.
  68.      To relieve constipation, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (fresh
  69. fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads), exercise, and
  70. drink more water (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  71.      If you feel dizzy or light-headed, sit or lie down for a while; get up
  72. slowly from a sitting or reclining position.
  73.      To relieve mouth dryness, suck on ice chips or a piece of hard candy or
  74. chew sugarless gum.
  75.      "Artificial tears" eye drops may help to relieve eye dryness.

  79.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  80. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  81. chest pain; depression; difficult or painful urination; enlarged, painful
  82. breasts (in both sexes); fainting; fever; muscle pain; muscle weakness;
  83. numbness or tingling sensations; palpitations; rash; shortness of breath; sore
  84. throat; swelling of the feet or ankles; weight gain; or yellowing of the eyes
  85. or skin.

  87. INTERACTIONS
  88.  
  89.      Disopyramide interacts with several other medications:
  90.      1. Phenytoin, rifampin, barbiturates, and glutethimide can decrease its
  91. effectiveness.
  92.      2. The combination of alcohol and disopyramide can lead to dizziness and
  93. hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels).  You should, therefore, avoid drinking
  94. alcoholic beverages while you are taking this medication.
  95.      3. The concurrent use of disopyramide and beta blockers (acebutolol,
  96. atenolol, betaxolol, carteolol, esmolol, labetalol, metoprolol, nadolol,
  97. penbutolol, pindolol, propranolol, and timolol) can have additive negative
  98. effects on the heart.
  99.      4. Disopyramide may interact with verapamil.
  100.      Before starting to take disopyramide, BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  101. any medications you are currently taking, especially any of those listed
  102. above.

  104. WARNINGS
  105.  
  106.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  107. any medications, especially to disopyramide.
  108.      * Tell your doctor if you now have or if you have ever had glaucoma,
  109. hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels), hypokalemia (low blood potassium
  110. levels), kidney disease, liver disease, myasthenia gravis, urinary retention,
  111. or an enlarged prostate gland.
  112.      * If this drug makes you dizzy or drowsy or blurs your vision, do not
  113. take part in any activity that requires alertness, such as driving a car or
  114. operating potentially dangerous equipment.
  115.      * This medication can decrease sweating and heat release from the body.
  116. You should, therefore, avoid getting overheated by strenuous exercise in hot
  117. weather and should avoid taking hot baths, showers, and saunas.
  118.      * Before having surgery or any other medical or dental treatment, be sure
  119. to tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medication.
  120.      * Disopyramide can cause hypoglycemia.  Signs of hypoglycemia include
  121. anxiety, chills, pale skin, headache, hunger, nausea, nervousness, shakiness,
  122. sweating, and weakness.  If you experience this reaction, eat or drink
  123. something containing sugar, and CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR.
  124.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  The effects of this
  125. medication during pregnancy have not been thoroughly studied in humans.  It is
  126. known that disopyramide passes into breast milk.  If you are breast-feeding an
  127. infant while being treated with this medication, tell your doctor.  Unless
  128. directed to do otherwise, breast-feeding is not recommended during treatment
  129. with this medication.
