  33.      Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container.

  35. USES
  36.  
  37.      Digitoxin belongs to a group of drugs known as digitalis glycosides.  It
  38. is used to treat heart arrhythmias and congestive heart failure.  Digitoxin
  39. improves the strength and efficiency of the heart and controls the heart
  40. rhythm.
  41.  
  42. TREATMENT
  43.  
  44.      To avoid stomach irritation, take digitoxin with food, water, or milk
  45. (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  46.      In order to become accustomed to taking this medication, try to take it
  47. at the same time each day.
  48.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose as soon as
  49. possible, unless it is almost time for the next dose.  In that case, do not
  50. take the missed dose at all; just return to your regular dosing schedule.  Do
  51. not double the next dose.  If you miss two or more doses, check with your
  52. doctor.
  53.      Digitoxin does not cure heart failure, but it will help to control the
  54. condition as long as you continue to take it.
  55.  
  56. SIDE EFFECTS
  57.  
  58.      Minor.
  59.  
  60.      Drowsiness, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, stomach upset, or
  61. vomiting.  These side effects should disappear as your body adjusts to the
  62. medication.
  63.  
  64.      Major.
  65.  
  66.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  67. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  68. bad dreams, blurred vision, breast enlargement (in both sexes), confusion,
  69. depression, disorientation, hallucinations, muscle weakness, palpitations, or
  70. tingling sensations.

  72. INTERACTIONS
  73.  
  74.      Digitoxin interacts with several other types of medications:
  75.      1. Barbiturates, phenytoin, aminoglutethimide, levodopa, penicillamine,
  76. phenylbutazone, and rifampin can decrease the blood levels and effectiveness
  77. of digitoxin.
  78.      2. The absorption of digitoxin from the gastrointestinal tract is reduced
  79. when it is taken with colestipol, cholestyramine, metoclopramide, antacids,
  80. neomycin, antineoplastic (anticancer) drugs, or sulfasalazine.
  81.      3. Tetracycline can increase the absorption of digitoxin from the
  82. gastrointestinal tract, which can increase the risk of side effects.
  83.      4. Spironolactone can unpredictably increase or decrease the side effects
  84. of digitoxin.
  85.      5. Concurrent use of quinidine, procainamide, hydroxychloroquine,
  86. calcium, reserpine, ephedrine, or beta blockers (acebutolol, atenolol,
  87. betaxolol, carteolol, esmolol, labetalol, metoprolol, nadolol, penbutolol,
  88. pindolol, propranolol, and timolol) with digitoxin can lead to additive
  89. effects on the heart.
  90.      6. The dosage of digitoxin may require adjustment if therapy with thyroid
  91. hormones, methimazole, or propylthiouracil is started.
  92.      7. Concurrent use of digitoxin and quinidine, quinine, erythromycin,
  93. amiodarone, benzodiazepine tranquilizers, diltiazem, nifedipine, or verapamil
  94. can increase the blood levels and the side effects of digitoxin.
  95.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  96. taking, especially those listed above.

  98. WARNINGS
  99.  
  100.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  101. medications, especially to digitoxin or any other digitalis glycoside.
  102.      * Before starting to take this medication, be sure to tell your doctor if
  103. you now have or if you have ever had blood electrolyte disorders (too much or
  104. too little calcium, magnesium, or potassium), heart disease, kidney disease,
  105. lung disease, liver disease, or thyroid disease.
  106.      * Before having surgery or any other medical or dental treatment, be sure
  107. to tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medication.
  108.      * Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any over-the-counter
  109. (nonprescription) allergy, asthma, cough, cold, diet, or sinus products.  Some
  110. of these products can increase the side effects of digitoxin.
  111.      * Do not stop taking this medication unless you first check with your
  112. doctor.  Stopping abruptly may lead to a worsening of your condition.
  113.      * While you are taking digitoxin, your doctor may want you to check your
  114. pulse every day.  If your pulse is slower than your doctor has told you it
  115. should be or if the rhythm is irregular, CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY.
  116.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Although digitoxin
  117. appears to be safe during pregnancy, extensive studies in humans have not been
  118. conducted.  In addition, the dosage of digitoxin required to control your
  119. disorder may change during pregnancy.  Also, tell your doctor if you are
  120. breast-feeding an infant.  It is not known if digitoxin passes into breast
  121. milk.
