  36.      Oral syrup (10 mg codeine and 100 mg guaifenesin per 5-ml spoonful, with
  37. 3.5% or 4.75% alcohol)

  39. STORAGE
  40.  
  41.      Codeine and guaifenesin combination should be stored at room temperature
  42. in a tightly closed container.
  43.  
  44. USES
  45.  
  46.      This medication is used to relieve coughs due to colds or infections or
  47. inflammation of the upper respiratory tract.  Guaifenesin is an expectorant,
  48. which loosens bronchial secretions.  Codeine is a narcotic cough suppressant,
  49. which acts on the cough center in the brain.
  50.  
  51. TREATMENT
  52.  
  53.      You can take codeine and guaifenesin combination syrup either on an empty
  54. stomach or, to avoid stomach irritation, with food or milk (as directed by
  55. your doctor).
  56.      Each dose should be measured carefully with a specially designed 5-ml
  57. measuring spoon.  An ordinary kitchen teaspoon is not accurate enough.
  58.      To help loosen the mucus in the bronchi, you should drink a glass of
  59. water after each dose.
  60.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed one as soon as
  61. possible, unless it is almost time for the next dose.  In that case, do not
  62. take the missed dose at all; just return to your regular dosing schedule.  Do
  63. not double the next dose.
  64.  
  65. SIDE EFFECTS
  66.  
  67.      Minor.
  68.  
  69.      Constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, restlessness, stomach upset,
  70. vomiting, or weakness.  These side effects should disappear as your body
  71. adjusts to the medication.
  72.      If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down for a while; get up slowly from a
  73. sitting or reclining position, and be careful on stairs.
  74.      To relieve constipation, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (fresh
  75. fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads), exercise, and
  76. drink more water (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).

  78.      Major.
  79.  
  80.      Be sure to tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  81. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  82. blurred vision; cold, clammy skin; confusion; difficulty in breathing; or
  83. fainting.

  85. INTERACTIONS
  86.  
  87.      Codeine and guaifenesin combination can interact with several other types
  88. of medications:
  89.      1. Concurrent use with other central nervous system depressants (such as
  90. alcohol, barbiturates, benzodiazepine tranquilizers, muscle relaxants, other
  91. narcotics, pain medications, phenothiazine tranquilizers, and sleeping
  92. medications) or with tricyclic antidepressants can lead to extreme drowsiness.
  93.      2. Use of a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor within 14 days of use of
  94. codeine and guaifenesin combination can lead to serious side effects.
  95.      3. Cimetidine combined with this medication can cause confusion,
  96. disorientation, and shortness of breath.
  97.      Before starting to take codeine and guaifenesin combination, BE SURE TO
  98. TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently taking.
  99.  
  100. WARNINGS
  101.  
  102.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  103. any medications, especially to guaifenesin or codeine, or to other narcotics
  104. (such as hydrocodone, hydromorphone, meperidine, methadone, opium, oxycodone,
  105. propoxyphene, and pentazocine).
  106.      * Before starting to take this medication, be sure to tell your doctor if
  107. you now have or if you have ever had asthma, brain disease, enlarged prostate
  108. gland, gallstones or gallbladder disease, gastrointestinal diseases, heart
  109. disease, kidney disease, liver disease, lung disease, mental disorders, or
  110. thyroid disease.
  111.      * If this drug makes you dizzy or drowsy, do not take part in activities
  112. that require alertness, such as driving a car or operating potentially
  113. dangerous equipment.  Be careful on stairs, and avoid getting up suddenly from
  114. a lying or sitting position.
  115.      * While you are taking this medication, drink several glasses of water a
  116. day to help loosen bronchial secretions, unless your doctor directs you to do
  117. otherwise.
  118.      * Because this product contains codeine, it has the potential for abuse
  119. and must be used with caution.  Tolerance may develop quickly; you should not
  120. use it in higher doses or for longer periods than recommended by your doctor.
  121. If you have been taking it for longer than several weeks, do not stop taking
  122. it until you first check with your doctor.  Stopping the drug abruptly can
  123. lead to a withdrawal reaction (body aches, diarrhea, gooseflesh, vomiting,
  124. restlessness, runny nose, sneezing, sweating, trembling, or excessive
  125. yawning).  Your doctor may, therefore, want to reduce your dosage gradually.
  126.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Large amounts of
  127. codeine taken during pregnancy can lead to addiction in the developing fetus,
  128. resulting in withdrawal reactions in the newborn infant.  Also, tell your
  129. doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.  Codeine may pass into breast milk
  130. and can cause extreme drowsiness in the nursing infant.
