  42.      This medication should be stored at room temperature in tightly closed,
  43. light-resistant containers.
  44.  
  45. USES
  46.  
  47.      Clorazepate is prescribed to treat the symptoms of anxiety and sometimes
  48. to treat seizures and alcohol withdrawal symptoms.  It is not clear exactly
  49. how this medicine works, but it may relieve anxiety by acting as a depressant
  50. of the central nervous system.  Clorazepate is used to relieve nervousness.
  51. It is effective for this purpose, but it is important to remove the cause of
  52. the anxiety as well.

  54. TREATMENT
  55.  
  56.      This medication should be taken exactly as directed by your doctor.  It
  57. can be taken with food or a full glass of water if stomach upset occurs.  Do
  58. not take this medication with a dose of antacids, since they may retard its
  59. absorption.
  60.      If you are taking this medication regularly and you miss a dose, take the
  61. missed dose immediately if you remember within an hour.  If more than an hour
  62. has passed, skip the dose you missed and wait for the next scheduled dose.  Do
  63. not double the next dose.
  64.  
  65. SIDE EFFECTS
  66.  
  67.      Minor.
  68.  
  69.      Bitter taste in the mouth, constipation, depression, diarrhea, dizziness,
  70. drowsiness (after a night's sleep), dry mouth, excessive salivation, fatigue,
  71. flushing, headache, heartburn, loss of appetite, nausea, nervousness,
  72. sweating, or vomiting.  As your body adjusts to the medicine, these side
  73. effects should disappear.
  74.      To relieve constipation, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (fresh
  75. fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads), exercise, and
  76. drink more water (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  77.      Dry mouth can be relieved by chewing sugarless gum or by sucking on ice
  78. chips.
  79.      If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down for a while; get up slowly from a
  80. sitting or reclining position, and be careful on stairs.

  84.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  85. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  86. blurred or double vision, chest pain, difficulty in urinating, fainting,
  87. falling, fever, joint pain, hallucinations, mouth sores, nightmares,
  88. palpitations, rash, severe depression, shortness of breath, slurred speech,
  89. sore throat, uncoordinated movements, unusual excitement, unusual tiredness,
  90. or yellowing of the eyes or skin.

  92. INTERACTIONS
  93.  
  94.      Clorazepate interacts with several other types of drugs:
  95.      1. To prevent oversedation, this drug should not be taken with alcohol or
  96. other sedative drugs, central nervous system depressants (such as
  97. antihistamines, barbiturates, muscle relaxants, pain medicines, narcotics,
  98. medicines for seizures, and phenothiazine tranquilizers), or with
  99. antidepressants.
  100.      2. This medication may decrease the effectiveness of carbamazepine,
  101. levodopa, and oral anticoagulants (blood thinners) and may increase the
  102. effects of phenytoin.
  103.      3. Disulfiram, oral contraceptives (birth control pills), isoniazid, and
  104. cimetidine can increase the blood levels of clorazepate, which can lead to
  105. increased sedation.
  106.      4. Concurrent use of rifampin may decrease the effectiveness of
  107. clorazepate.
  108.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  109. taking, especially any of those listed above.
  110.  
  111. WARNINGS
  112.  
  113.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  114. any medications, especially to clorazepate or other benzodiazepine
  115. tranquilizers (such as alprazolam, chlordiazepoxide, diazepam, flurazepam,
  116. halazepam, lorazepam, oxazepam, prazepam, temazepam, and triazolam).
  117.      * Tell your doctor if you now have or if you have ever had liver disease,
  118. kidney disease, epilepsy, lung disease, myasthenia gravis, porphyria,
  119. depression, or mental illness.
  120.      * This medicine can cause drowsiness.  Avoid tasks that require
  121. alertness, such as driving a car or using potentially dangerous equipment.
  122.      * This medication has the potential for abuse and must be used with
  123. caution.  Tolerance may develop quickly; do not increase the dosage without
  124. first consulting your doctor.  It is also important not to stop taking this
  125. drug suddenly if you have been taking it in large amounts or if you have used
  126. it for several weeks.  Your doctor may want to reduce the dosage gradually.
  127.      * This is a safe drug when used properly.  When it is combined with other
  128. sedative drugs or alcohol, however, serious side effects may develop.
  129.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  This medicine may
  130. increase the chance of birth defects if it is taken during the first three
  131. months of pregnancy.  In addition, too much use of this medicine during the
  132. last six months of pregnancy may cause the baby to become dependent on it.
  133. This may result in withdrawal side effects in the newborn.  Also, use of this
  134. medicine during the last weeks of pregnancy may cause excessive drowsiness,
  135. slowed heartbeat, and breathing difficulties in the newborn.  Tell your doctor
  136. if you are breast-feeding an infant.  This medicine can pass into the breast
  137. milk and cause excessive drowsiness, slowed heartbeat, and breathing
  138. difficulties in the nursing infant.
