  33. STORAGE
  34.  
  35.      Clemastine tablets and oral syrup should be stored at room temperature in
  36. tightly closed containers.
  37.  
  38. USES
  39.  
  40.      This medication belongs to a group of drugs known as antihistamines
  41. (antihistamines block the action of histamine, a chemical that is released by
  42. the body during an allergic reaction).  It is, therefore, used to treat or
  43. prevent symptoms of allergy.
  44.  
  45. TREATMENT
  46.  
  47.      To avoid stomach upset, you can take clemastine with food or with a full
  48. glass of milk or water (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  49.      Each dose of the oral syrup should be measured carefully with a specially
  50. designed 5-ml measuring spoon.  An ordinary kitchen teaspoon is not accurate
  51. enough.
  52.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose as soon as
  53. possible, unless it is almost time for your next dose.  In that case, do not
  54. take the missed dose at all; just return to your regular dosing schedule.  Do
  55. not double the next dose.

  57. SIDE EFFECTS
  58.  
  59.      Minor.
  60.  
  61.      Blurred vision; confusion; constipation; diarrhea; difficult or painful
  62. urination; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth, throat, or nose; headache;
  63. irritability; loss of appetite; nausea; restlessness; ringing or buzzing in
  64. the ears; stomach upset; or unusual increase in sweating.  These side effects
  65. should disappear as your body adjusts to the medication.
  66.      This medication can cause increased sensitivity to sunlight.  It is,
  67. therefore, important to avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and sunlamps.
  68. Wear protective clothing, and use an effective sunscreen.
  69.      If you are constipated, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (fresh
  70. fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads), exercise, and
  71. drink more water (unless your doctor tells you not to do so).
  72.      Chew sugarless gum or suck on ice chips or a piece of hard candy to
  73. reduce mouth dryness.
  74.      If you feel dizzy or light-headed, sit or lie down for a while; get up
  75. from a sitting or lying position slowly, and be careful on stairs.

  79.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  80. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  81. change in menstruation, clumsiness, feeling faint, flushing of the face,
  82. hallucinations, palpitations, rash, seizures, shortness of breath, sleeping
  83. disorders, sore throat or fever, tightness in the chest, unusual bleeding or
  84. bruising, or unusual tiredness or weakness.

  86. INTERACTIONS
  87.  
  88.      Clemastine interacts with other types of medications:
  89.      1. Concurrent use of it with central nervous system depressants (such as
  90. alcohol, barbiturates, benzodiazepine tranquilizers, muscle relaxants,
  91. narcotics, pain medications, and phenothiazine tranquilizers) or with
  92. tricyclic antidepressants can cause extreme drowsiness.
  93.      2. Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors (isocarboxazid, pargyline,
  94. phenelzine and tranylcypromine) can increase the side effects of this
  95. medication.  At least 14 days should separate the use of this drug and the use
  96. of an MAO inhibitor.
  97.      3. Clemastine can also decrease the activity of oral anticoagulants
  98. (blood thinners, such as warfarin).
  99.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  100. taking, especially any of the medications that are listed above.

  102. WARNINGS
  103.  
  104.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  105. any medications, especially to clemastine or to other antihistamines (such as
  106. astemizole, azatadine, brompheniramine, carbinoxamine, chlorpheniramine,
  107. cyproheptadine, dexchlorpheniramine, dimenhydrinate, dimethindene,
  108. diphenhydramine, diphenylpyraline, doxylamine, hydroxyzine, phenidamine,
  109. promethazine, pyrilamine, terfenadine, trimeprazine, tripelennamine, and
  110. triprolidine).
  111.      * Tell your doctor if you now have or if you have ever had asthma, blood
  112. vessel disease, glaucoma, high blood pressure, kidney disease, peptic ulcers,
  113. enlarged prostate gland, or thyroid disease.
  114.      * Clemastine can cause drowsiness or dizziness.  Your ability to perform
  115. tasks that require alertness, such as driving a car or operating dangerous
  116. equipment, may be decreased.  Appropriate caution should, be taken.
  117.      * Drinking alcoholic beverages can increase the sedative effects of
  118. clemastine.
  119.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  The effects of this
  120. medication during pregnancy have not been thoroughly studied in humans.  Also,
  121. tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.  Small amounts of
  122. clemastine pass into breast milk and may cause unusual excitement or
  123. irritability in nursing infants.
