  38.      Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container.

  40. USES
  41.  
  42.      Chlorthalidone is prescribed to treat high blood pressure.  It is also
  43. used to reduce fluid accumulation in the body caused by conditions such as
  44. heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, kidney disease, and the long-term use
  45. of some medications.  This medication reduces fluid accumulation by increasing
  46. the elimination of salt and water through the kidneys.
  47.  
  48. TREATMENT
  49.  
  50.      To decrease stomach irritation, you can take this medication with a glass
  51. of milk or with a meal (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).  Try
  52. to take it at the same time every day.  Avoid taking a dose after 6:00 p.m.;
  53. otherwise, you may have to get up during the night to urinate.
  54.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose as soon as
  55. possible, unless it is almost time for the next dose.  In that case, do not
  56. take the missed dose at all; just wait until the next scheduled dose.  Do not
  57. double the dose.
  58.      This medication does not cure high blood pressure, but it will help to
  59. control the condition.
  60.  
  61. SIDE EFFECTS
  62.  
  63.      Minor.
  64.  
  65.      Constipation, cramps, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, headache,
  66. heartburn, loss of appetite, restlessness, or stomach upset.  As your body
  67. adjusts to the medication, these side effects should disappear.
  68.      This medication can cause increased sensitivity to sunlight.  Therefore,
  69. avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and sunlamps.  Wear protective clothing,
  70. and use an effective sunscreen.
  71.      To relieve constipation, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (fresh
  72. fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads) and exercise
  73. (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  74.      To avoid dizziness or light-headedness when you stand, contract and relax
  75. the muscles of your legs for a few moments before rising.  Do this by pushing
  76. one foot against the floor while raising the other foot slightly, alternating
  77. feet so that you are "pumping" your legs in a pedaling motion.
  78.  
  79.      Major.

  81.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  82. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  83. any blurred vision, confusion, difficulty in breathing, dry mouth, excessive
  84. thirst, excessive weakness, fever, itching, joint pain, mood changes, muscle
  85. pains or spasms, nausea, palpitations, skin rash, sore throat, tingling in the
  86. fingers or toes, unusual bleeding or bruising, vomiting, or yellowing of the
  87. eyes or skin.

  89. INTERACTIONS
  90.  
  91.      Chlorthalidone interacts with several other types of drugs:
  92.      1. It may decrease the effectiveness of oral anticoagulants, antigout
  93. medications, insulin, oral antidiabetic medicines, and methenamine.
  94.      2. Fenfluramine can increase the blood-pressure-lowering effects of
  95. chlorthalidone, which can be dangerous.
  96.      3. Indomethacin can decrease the blood-pressure-lowering effects of
  97. chlorthalidone and counteract the desired effects.
  98.      4. Cholestyramine and colestipol decrease the absorption of this
  99. medication from the gastrointestinal tract.  Chlorthalidone should, therefore,
  100. be taken one hour before or four hours after a dose of cholestyramine or
  101. colestipol (if you have also been prescribed one of these medications).
  102.      5. The side effects of amphotericin B, calcium, cortisone-like steroids
  103. (such as cortisone, dexamethasone, hydrocortisone, prednisone and
  104. prednisolone), digoxin, digitalis, lithium, quinidine, sulfonamide
  105. antibiotics, and vitamin D may be increased by chlorthalidone.
  106.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  107. taking, especially any of those listed above.
  108.  
  109. WARNINGS
  110.  
  111.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  112. any drugs, especially to diuretics or any other sulfa drugs, including oral
  113. antidiabetics and sulfonamide antibiotics.
  114.      * Before you start taking chlorthalidone, tell your doctor if you now
  115. have or if you have ever had kidney disease or problems with urination,
  116. diabetes mellitus, gout, liver disease, asthma, pancreatic disease, or
  117. systemic lupus erythematosus.
  118.      * Chlorthalidone can cause potassium loss.  Signs of potassium loss
  119. include dry mouth, thirst, weakness, muscle pain or cramps, nausea, and
  120. vomiting.  If you experience any of these symptoms, call your doctor.  To help
  121. avoid potassium loss, take this drug with a glass of fresh or frozen orange or
  122. cranberry juice, or eat a banana every day.  The use of a salt substitute also
  123. helps to prevent potassium loss.  Do not change your diet or use a salt
  124. substitute, however, before discussing it with your doctor.  Too much
  125. potassium can also be dangerous.  Your doctor may want to have blood tests
  126. performed periodically to monitor your potassium levels.
  127.      * Limit your intake of alcoholic beverages while taking this medication,
  128. to prevent dizziness and light-headedness.
  129.      * If you have high blood pressure, do not take any over-the-counter
  130. (nonprescription) medications for weight control or for cough, cold, allergy,
  131. asthma, or sinus problems unless your doctor directs you to do so.
  132.      * To prevent dehydration (severe water loss) while taking this
  133. medication, check with your doctor if you have any illness that causes severe
  134. or continuous nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
  135.      * This medication can raise blood sugar levels in diabetic patients.
  136. Therefore, blood sugar should be carefully monitored by blood or urine tests.
  137.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Although studies in
  138. humans have not been conducted, chlorthalidone can cross the placenta and may
  139. cause adverse effects in the developing fetus.  Also, tell your doctor if you
  140. are breastfeeding an infant.  Although problems in humans have not been
  141. reported, small amounts of this drug can pass into breast milk, so caution is
  142. warranted.
