  39.      Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container.
  40.  
  41. USES
  42.  
  43.      Chlorothiazide is prescribed to treat high blood pressure.  It is also
  44. used to reduce fluid accumulation in the body caused by conditions such as
  45. heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, kidney disease, and the long-term use
  46. of some medications.  It reduces fluid accumulation by increasing the
  47. elimination of salt and water through the kidneys.
  48.  
  49. TREATMENT
  50.  
  51.      To decrease stomach irritation, you can take this medication with a glass
  52. of milk or with a meal (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).  Try
  53. to take it at the same time every day.  Avoid taking a dose after 6:00 p.m.;
  54. otherwise, you may have to get up during the night to urinate.
  55.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose as soon as
  56. possible, unless it is almost time for the next dose.  In that case, do not
  57. take the missed dose at all, just wait until the next scheduled dose.  Do not
  58. double the dose.
  59.      This medication does not cure high blood pressure, but it will help to
  60. control the condition.
  61.  
  62. SIDE EFFECTS
  63.  
  64.      Minor.
  65.  
  66.      Constipation, cramps, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, headache,
  67. heartburn, loss of appetite, restlessness, or upset stomach.  As your body
  68. adjusts to the medication, these side effects should disappear.
  69.      This medication can cause increased sensitivity to sunlight.  Avoid
  70. prolonged exposure to sunlight or sunlamps.  Wear protective clothing, and use
  71. effective sunscreen.
  72.      To relieve constipation, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (fresh
  73. fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads) and exercise
  74. (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  75.      To avoid dizziness or light-headedness when you stand, contract and relax
  76. the muscles of your legs for a few moments before rising.  Do this by pushing
  77. one foot against the floor while raising the other foot slightly, alternating
  78. feet so that you are "pumping" your legs in a pedaling motion.
  79.  
  80.      Major.
  81.  
  82.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  83. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  84. blurred vision, confusion, difficulty in breathing, dry mouth, excessive
  85. thirst, excessive weakness, fever, itching, joint pain, mood changes, muscle
  86. pains or spasms, nausea, palpitations, skin rash, sore throat, tingling in the
  87. fingers or toes, unusual bleeding or bruising, vomiting, or yellowing of the
  88. eyes or skin.
  89.  
  90. INTERACTIONS
  91.  
  92.      Chlorothiazide diuretic and antihypertensive interacts with several other
  93. types of medications:
  94.      1. It may decrease the effectiveness of oral anticoagulants, antigout
  95. medications, insulin, oral antidiabetic medicines, and methenamine.
  96.      2. Fenfluramine can increase the blood-pressure-lowering effects of
  97. chlorothiazide, which can be dangerous.
  98.      3. Indomethacin can decrease the blood-pressure-lowering effects of
  99. chlorothiazide and counteract the desired effects.
  100.      4. Cholestyramine and colestipol decrease the absorption of this
  101. medication from the gastrointestinal tract.  Chlorothiazide should, therefore,
  102. be taken one hour before or four hours after a dose of cholestyramine or
  103. colestipol (if you have also been prescribed one of these medications).
  104.      5. The side effects of amphotericin B, calcium, cortisone-like steroids
  105. (such as cortisone, dexamethasone, hydrocortisone, prednisone, and
  106. prednisolone), digoxin, digitalis, lithium, quinidine, sulfonamide
  107. antibiotics, and vitamin D may be increased by chlorothiazide.
  108.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  109. taking.
  110.  
  111. WARNINGS
  112.  
  113.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  114. any medications, especially to diuretics or any other sulfa drugs, including
  115. oral antidiabetic medications and sulfonamide antibiotics.
  116.      * Before you start taking chlorothiazide, tell your doctor if you now
  117. have or if you have ever had kidney disease or problems with urination,
  118. diabetes mellitus, gout, liver disease, asthma, pancreas disease, or systemic
  119. lupus erythematosus.
  120.      * Chlorothiazide can cause potassium loss.  Signs of potassium loss
  121. include dry mouth, thirst, weakness, muscle pain or cramps, nausea, and
  122. vomiting.  If you experience any of these symptoms, call your doctor.  To help
  123. avoid potassium loss, take this drug with a glass of fresh or frozen orange or
  124. cranberry juice, or eat a banana every day.  The use of a salt substitute also
  125. helps to prevent potassium loss.  Do not change your diet or use a salt
  126. substitute, however, before discussing it with your doctor.  Too much
  127. potassium can also be dangerous.  Your doctor may want to have blood tests
  128. performed periodically to monitor your potassium levels.
  129.      * Limit your intake of alcoholic beverages while taking this medication,
  130. in order to prevent dizziness and light-headedness.
  131.      * If you have high blood pressure, do not take any over-the-counter
  132. (nonprescription) medications for weight control or for cough, cold, allergy,
  133. asthma, or sinus problems unless your doctor directs you to do so.
  134.      * To prevent dehydration (severe water loss) while taking this
  135. medication, check with your doctor if you have any illness that causes severe
  136. or continuous nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
  137.      * This medication can raise blood sugar levels in diabetic patients.
  138. Therefore, blood sugar should be carefully monitored by blood or urine tests
  139. when this medication is being taken.
  140.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Although studies in
  141. humans have not been conducted, chlorothiazide can cross the placenta and may
  142. cause adverse effects in the developing fetus.  Also, tell your doctor if you
  143. are breastfeeding an infant.  Although problems in humans have not been
  144. reported, small amounts of this drug can pass into breast milk, so caution is
  145. warranted.
