  33.      Azathioprine should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed,
  34. light-resistant container.

  36. USES
  37.  
  38.      This medication is used to prevent rejection of kidney transplants and to
  39. control the symptoms of severe rheumatoid arthritis.  It is not clear exactly
  40. how azathioprine works, but it is known to act on the body's immune system.

  42. TREATMENT
  43.  
  44.      In order to prevent nausea and vomiting, you can take azathioprine with
  45. food or after a meal (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  46.      Try not to miss any doses of this medication.  If you do miss a dose,
  47. take the missed dose as soon as possible, unless it is almost time for the
  48. next scheduled dose.  In that case, do not take the missed dose at all; just
  49. return to your regular dosing schedule.  Do not double the next dose.  If you
  50. miss more than one dose, CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR.

  52. SIDE EFFECTS
  53.  
  54.      Minor.
  55.  
  56.      Diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting.  These side effects should disappear over
  57. time and as your body adjusts to the medication.
  58.  
  59.      Major.
  60.  
  61.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  62. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  63. darkened urine, fever, hair loss, joint pains, mouth sores, muscle aches, skin
  64. rash, sore throat, unusual bleeding or bruising, or yellowing of the eyes or
  65. skin.

  67. INTERACTIONS
  68.  
  69.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR if you are already taking allopurinol.  This
  70. medication can possibly increase the blood levels of azathioprine, which can
  71. lead to serious side effects.

  73. WARNINGS
  74.  
  75.      * Be sure to tell your doctor about any unusual or allergic reactions
  76. that you have had to any medications, especially to those you may have
  77. experienced after taking azathioprine.
  78.      * Before starting to take this medication, be sure to tell your doctor if
  79. you now have or if you have ever had gout, kidney disease, liver disease,
  80. pancreatitis, or recurrent infections.
  81.      * Azathioprine is potent medicine.  Your doctor will want to monitor your
  82. therapy carefully with blood tests, so that you take the least amount of the
  83. drug possible.
  84.      * Do not stop taking this medication unless you first check with your
  85. doctor.  Stopping therapy with this drug abruptly may lead to a worsening of
  86. your condition.  Your doctor may, therefore, want to start you on another drug
  87. before therapy with azathioprine is stopped.
  88.      * There is a chance that azathioprine may cause unwanted effects months
  89. or years later.  These delayed effects may include certain types of cancer.
  90. Be sure to discuss these possible effects with your doctor.
  91.      * Azathioprine can increase your susceptibility to infections.  It is,
  92. therefore, important to contact your doctor at the first sign of infection.
  93. Your dose of azathioprine may need to be adjusted.
  94.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Birth defects have
  95. been reported in the offspring of animals that received large doses of
  96. azathioprine during pregnancy.  This drug also has the potential for producing
  97. birth defects in human offspring.  Use of this drug is not recommended during
  98. pregnancy.  There is a possibility that birth defects may occur in the
  99. offspring if either the male or female is using this drug at the time of
  100. conception.  Use of birth control is recommended while taking this drug.
  101. Also, tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.  It is not known
  102. whether azathioprine passes into breast milk.
