  33.      Store this medication in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry place,
  34. away from heat or direct light, and out of the reach of children.

  36. USES
  37.  
  38.      Astemizole is indicated for the treatment of the allergic symptoms of
  39. conditions such as hay fever or hives.  It belongs to a group of drugs known
  40. as antihistamines, which act by blocking the action of histamine, a chemical
  41. that is released by the body during an allergic reaction.  It may be useful in
  42. patients unable to tolerate side effects, such as sedation, that other
  43. antihistamines may produce.

  45. TREATMENT
  46.  
  47.      Astemizole should be taken only as needed, and the prescribed dose should
  48. not be exceeded.
  49.      Because food significantly impairs the absorption of this medication, the
  50. drug should be taken on an empty stomach, at least two hours after a meal.  No
  51. additional food should be taken for at least an hour after a dose is taken.
  52.      It may take up to two days for astemizole to achieve its full therapeutic
  53. effect.

  55. SIDE EFFECTS
  56.  
  57.      Minor.
  58.  
  59.      Abdominal pain, diarrhea, drowsiness, dry mouth, gas, headache, increased
  60. appetite, nervousness, increased sensitivity to sunlight, or weight gain.
  61.      To relieve mouth dryness, chew sugarless gum or suck on ice chips or hard
  62. candy.

  66.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  67. particularly bothersome.  It is ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  68. symptoms of a hypersensitivity reaction such as shortness of breath or rash.

  70. INTERACTIONS
  71.  
  72.      Although clinical studies with astemizole have not shown significant
  73. interactions with central nervous system depressants, such as alcohol or
  74. diazepam, it is important to be aware of the possibility of interactions.  BE
  75. SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about all medications you are taking before starting
  76. astemizole.

  78. WARNINGS
  79.  
  80.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  81. any medication, especially to astemizole.
  82.      * Although astemizole is a less-sedating antihistamine, some patients may
  83. be more sensitive to its effects.  Until you are familiar with how astemizole
  84. affects you, be especially cautious in performing tasks that require
  85. alertness.
  86.      * Tell your physician of any known liver ailments.  Patients with
  87. diseases of the liver may not eliminate astemizole as rapidly as those with
  88. normal liver function.
  89.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become
  90. pregnant.  The safety of astemizole in pregnant women has not been
  91. established.  In animal studies in which administered doses of astemizole
  92. exceeded dosage levels used in humans, an increased incidence of low birth
  93. weight and risk of infant death was noted.  Since breakdown products of the
  94. drug may remain in the body for up to four months after use, this fact should
  95. be taken into consideration if pregnancy is being planned.
  96.      * Because babies are more sensitive to the side effects of
  97. antihistamines, such as excitement or irritability, astemizole is not
  98. recommended in nursing mothers until its effects upon infants are more fully
  99. established.
