- How Much Water Is Needed for Good Health?
-
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- QUESTION: I drink several glasses of water each day, as it is still my
- favorite thirst-quencher. However, my wife drinks nothing except for a cup of
- coffee with her meals. I know that I have read that water is healthy, and
- that you should drink at least a quart a day. Is this true? Won't you please
- discuss this in your column, so I can use it to convince my wife?
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- ANSWER: Yes, water is certainly important to all the functioning of a healthy
- body, and the truth is you need a bit more that 2 quarts or eight cups per
- day. While the water content of juices, soft drinks, and the amount contained
- in vegetables and fruits, all helps to make up the needed total, the water in
- coffee or tea doesn't. Both coffee and tea contain chemicals that act as
- diuretics, which cause you to lose fluid from the body. Alcohol can also
- cause dehydration. With water composing about 20 percent of the bones in our
- bodies, about 80 percent of the blood, and 70 percent of our brains, it is
- truly an essential component of our makeup. It controls temperature, forms
- part of the fluids that lubricate our joints, and is involved in every
- metabolic process in our systems. During a normal day we lose about two
- quarts of water from our bodies, about a cup in the air we breathe out, half a
- cup in normal perspiration, another have a cup in fecal material, and the rest
- as urine. If the day is hot, or we have exercised (and perspired)
- extensively, we need even more water than usual, as much as another quart or
- two depending upon the amount lost. While thirst indicates we need more
- liquids, it comes after the fluid level is already low. So you see, the rule
- really applies. Drink at least 8 glasses of liquids each day to keep your
- system functioning properly, and if water is your favorite beverage, so be it.
- Now your problem remains in convincing your wife of the health benefits of
- water.
