- Eating Raw Oysters in Months Without R's
-
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- QUESTION: I love raw oysters, and don't believe the old superstition that
- says they can't be eaten during months without the letter "R" in it. Can you
- explain the origin of that story and help me debunk it?
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- ANSWER: Explain? Yes! Debunk? No! There is a very sound principle behind
- the "R" rule that would be best extended to protect the health of oyster
- lovers. Many oysters come from warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. In the
- summer months a bacteria, Vibrio vulnificus, is known to grow in the oyster,
- which can produce symptoms that range from a mild diarrhea to a serious life
- threatening disease in those with diseases that have altered their immune
- systems, have pre-existing digestive or liver diseases, or diabetes mellitus.
- Current recommendations from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) include
- some "R" months to those when eating oysters is a "no-no" (stretching from
- April, through the summer to include September and October as well), for the
- bacteria level during those months is high enough to be dangerous. For more
- information you might wish to call the FDA Seafood Hotline Monday through
- Friday between noon and 4 PM EDT to talk with a seafood specialist
- (1-800-FDA-4010). At other times, recorded information is available using a
- touch-tone telephone.
