Symptoms of Wilson's Disease
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
QUESTION: I would appreciate more information on Wilson Disease. My 32 year
old granddaughter has been diagnosed with it after so many examinations and
tests. When I tell people of it the inquiry is always "What is it? I never
heard of it." Thank you.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ANSWER: The first complete and accurate description of the disease was
published by Samuel Wilson, a neurologist, in 1912, but even he didn't know
what caused the malady. It wasn't until the technology of the 1940's
permitted the necessary tests that proved that copper was the cause. Today we
know that Wilson's disease is an inherited disorder of copper metabolism, and
can cause a variety of symptoms. It is not as rare as once thought, and the
incidence is about 1 in 200,000 births. It affects men and women equally and
often becomes apparent in late adolescence. It may cause an anemia,
neurological symptoms such as tremor, speech disorders and sometimes bizarre
behavior, as well liver damage. In fact, a liver biopsy is often the most
important test in establishing the diagnosis. Treatment is available and
effective. A chelating agent, penicillamine, is used to reduce the excess of
copper that is present in the body, and treatment must be repeated at frequent
intervals for the lifetime of the patient. A low copper diet is also
recommended, avoiding chocolate, shellfish and peanuts.
