- QUESTION: I have had allergies since my childhood, and am particularly
- sensitive to cats. They don't even have to be in the room to set me off, but
- if a cat has been around, I will start to wheeze very shortly after I have
- entered the room. I think it has something to do with their dandruff, but
- just how does it get my lungs to malfunction? I have always been curious
- about this but never could find time to ask my doctor.

- ANSWER: Allergic reactions vary from person to person, and can affect the
- skin (hives); the gastrointestinal system, which results in nausea, vomiting
- or diarrhea; or the respiratory system. The dander of a cat is formed of
- small scales from their hair or fur, while dandruff is the result of scales
- from the skin of the scalp. Even when they are not physically present in the
- room, these scales remain in the rug or on the furniture and can be stirred
- merely by your walking about. When the scales touch the tissue lining (mucous
- membranes) of the respiratory tract in a sensitive individual, the membranes
- can swell, or produce large amounts of mucus. Together these conditions block
- the air passage and can produce a wheeze. In some cases the small muscles in
- the bronchioles (tube like passages that carry the air) can contract,
- squeezing the passageway and this also causes wheezing. Bronchodilators and
- antihistamines are very effective in reversing the condition.
