Unpleasant Smelling Urine and Possible Causes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
QUESTION: Can you tell me what makes urine smell real bad? I have had this
for over a year, and would like to be rid of it. Thank you for any
suggestions or help you can give me?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ANSWER: In a healthy person who is properly hydrated, the odor of urine,
while typical, is not considered offensive. However there are many possible
situations in which the odor of urine is changed, and the new odor may be
displeasing to some noses.
Dehydration (lack of sufficient body fluid) can produce a concentrated
urine with an intense odor that is still perceived as urine. Some diseases,
such as diabetes (diabetic ketoacidosis), kidney and liver failure also
produce unpleasant odors. In some cases the odor of a urine is changed by
medications that are taken on a regular basis, and certain foods may also
provoke a change. However the most logical possibility in your case of
prolonged bad odor is an infection in your bladder or urinary tract. The only
sure path to an exact answer is a visit to your own physician.
