- ANSWER: Your letter quite clearly describes a condition known as
- "blepharitis," but since there are two major types of this condition I can't
- be more specific. The first, and more serious, is ulcerative blepharitis,
- caused by a bacterial infection. Staphylococcus is the most common bacteria,
- and the condition will require treatment with prescription antibiotics. It is
- not clear what causes non-ulcerative blepharitis, which may be due to allergy
- or associated with a seborrheic condition of the face and scalp. In either
- case, the condition has a tendency to recur frequently. The ulcerative type
- may result in scarring of the lids and loss of eyelashes. Warm compresses are
- used in the morning to help clear away the secretions or crusts, after which
- the medications in drop or ointment form are applied. You must be diligent
- and patient if you are going to be successful in combatting this common
- ailment.
