- A Resource About Information on Lupus
-
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- With a constant flow of letters requesting more information about Lupus,
- it is apparent that there is considerable interest in this disease, and the
- need to present more information. It is estimated that about 16,000 Americans
- develop lupus each year, and that about 500,000 Americans have already been
- diagnosed with lupus.
- Lupus is a chronic disease of the immune systems, and can show itself in
- a wide variety of ways. Although for many it is a relatively mild disease, it
- can be a serious, even life-threatening illness for many others. Obviously
- the more you know about the condition, the greater will be your ability to
- cope with its manifestations, and deal with the problems it can cause.
- The best source of current information about lupus (other than your own
- physician) is the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA). It was founded in 1977,
- to educate the public about lupus, provide support services to people with
- lupus and their families and support research into the cause and cure of the
- disease. You can obtain their basic information packet, which is free to all
- who request it, that contains an informative brochure that describes lupus and
- answers many of your questions. In addition their is a publications order
- form and a listing of the addresses of all their local chapters. You can
- obtain all this information by calling their toll free number 1-800-558-0121,
- or by writing directly to their national headquarters office: Lupus
- Foundation of America, 4 Research Place, Suite 180, Rockville, MD 20850-3226.
