A Resource About Surgery for Crohn's Disease
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Diagnosed with ever increasing frequency, Crohn's Disease, a chronic
inflammatory disease of the ileum and colon is the subject of many questions.
One of the most common is the need for surgery in patients with this ailment.
While different conditions dictate different approaches to treatment, from 65
percent to 75 percent of patients with Crohn's disease will need surgery at
some time during their lives. When medical treatments can not control the
symptoms, though surgery itself does not cure this disease, its use must be
considered. To be more fully informed about the need for surgery, a careful
study of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation (CCFA) booklet "Questions and
Answers About Surgery" is highly recommended. Since the booklet also
discusses surgery in Ulcerative Colitis, I am sure it will be of interest to
many readers. You may obtain your copy either by writing or calling CCFA, 444
Park Avenue South, 11th Floor, New York, NY 10016 (tel #: 1-800 343-3637), and
mentioning that you read about the booklet in Dr. Bruckheim's column. It is
yours without charge.
