  16.      October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a program now in its
  17. sixth year, and it is important that I bring its message to you.  The
  18. statistics are frightening and breast cancer which will be diagnosed in more
  19. than 150,000 woman this year as the most common form of cancer in women, and
  20. their second leading cancer killer.  The best defense against this disease is
  21. early detection, yet when women were questioned about the subject of
  22. mammography (special x-ray technique that detects masses in the breast) in a
  23. study conducted by the National Cancer Institute and reported in The Journal
  24. of the American Medical Association, the most frequently given response for
  25. not getting a mammogram was that the women did not know they needed one.  But
  26. the word is getting out.  William Lalor, President of ICI Pharmaceuticals
  27. Group wrote to the presidents of all "Fortune 500" industrial companies
  28. telling them of his company's program which offers free mammography to its
  29. women employees and encouraging them to do the same.  And I am asking you to
  30. send for your free copy of the booklet "Early Detection. . . Your Best
  31. Protection" which provides you with the answers to many questions about breast
  32. cancer, and provides the guidelines for mammography to help you.  Send a
  33. stamped self addressed business sized envelope to Booklet, P.O. Box 4333,
  34. Grand Central Station, New York, NY 10163-4333.  The booklet is also available
  35. in a Spanish language edition.  The founding sponsors of National Breast
  36. Cancer Awareness Month are the American Academy of Family Physicians, ICI
