A Resource About Boning Up On Osteoporosis
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With more than 24 million Americans affected by osteoporosis, it is
little wonder that my mail is always filled with questions about the causes
and treatment of this disorder. As many as 1.2 million fractures a year may
be attributed to osteoporosis and the national medical and ancillary costs
incurred for treatment and care has been estimated at from
$7 to $10 billion a year. It seems that each time I answer a question
concerning one aspect of this growing health problem, it generates hundreds
more, individual concerns and special situations that affect people in
specific ways. To answer all these important queries would take a book, and
that is exactly what I am able to provide for you today. It is called "Boning
Up On Osteoporosis: A Guide to Prevention and Treatment". It may be obtained
from the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), 1625 Eye Street, N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20006. Now this is no simple brochure, but a true booklet of
40 pages, and contains full explanations about bone growth, the causes of and
risk factors for osteoporosis, and many strategies for prevention and
treatment of the condition. There are even 8 pages of well illustrated
exercises that can help strengthen posture. The many techniques for
diagnosing the problem are related in detail, and there are sections
describing present as well as new investigational treatments. You will even
find listings of additional reading material you may wish to obtain. Don't
bother sending an envelope for this booklet, since it won't fit an ordinary
business envelope, and although there is no charge for the booklet, the folks
at the NOF would appreciate a $1.00 donation to help them offset the costs of
mailing this most worthwhile booklet to you. You won't regret it, it is money
very well spent.
