- A Resource About Donation of Organs
-

- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- A recent broadcast on my local Public Broadcasting Station told the
- intriguing story of the advancement of surgery and the development of the
- techniques now used in organ transplantation. These amazing procedures bring
- new life and vitality to the grateful recipients, and allow a certain measure
- of "immortality" to those who have thoughtfully provided the much needed
- organs, once their own life had run its course. Since human organs can not be
- obtained except through donation, it is important work that the United Network
- for Organ Sharing (UNOS) has undertaken. By making Americans aware of the
- need for organ donation and by providing easily understood information, UNOS
- to gain the support of all of us, and provide the opportunity to extend the
- life of another person faced with untimely death due to progressive disease.
- Transplantation is no longer an experimental procedure, but is an important
- option that may be offered to a patient when organs are available. You can
- find out much more about the Organ Donor Program by obtaining the booklet "A
- Guide for the Donation of Organs and Tissues for Transplantation" obtainable
- on request from UNOS, P.O. Box 13770, Richmond, Virginia 23225, or by calling
- their toll free hot line 1-800-24-DONOR. The booklet not only contains a
- wealth of information you should know, but also include an Organ Donor Card
- which you may fill out and carry with you, which will help recognize you as an
- Organ Donor anywhere in the United States, if you choose to fill it out and
- carry it with you. Of course you are under no obligation to do so, and you
- may request this booklet without any apprehension.
