A Resource About American Mental Health Fund
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is pretty hard to estimate the cost of the suffering caused by mental
illness in the United Sates, but the number of victims is frightening. More
than 35 million Americans, from all walks of life and from all parts of our
society, are affected by some form of mental illness. And it is an illness,
that requires medical attention and care as would any other affliction. Though
it may strike more people than cancer, heart disease and lung disease
combined, it frequently goes unrecognized because the symptoms are so subtle
and varying. Since proper treatment can't start without diagnoses, and
diagnoses can't be made without consultations, the American Mental Health Fund
(AMHF) has embarked on a campaign to make us all more aware of mental illness.
To this end they have prepared an informative brochure "What you don't know
about mental illness could fill a booklet" to help educate, and assist needed
efforts to obtain help. A careful reading of this brochure will provide you
with some words about the warning signs of mental illness, and action
guidelines if you believe that someone you love is a victim. There are many
addresses and telephone numbers of organizations that can be of enormous
assistance in helping you find appropriate and effective care. You may obtain
your free copy of this pamphlet by sending your request and a stamped
self-addressed business envelope DIRECTLY to The American Mental Health Fund,
P.O. Box 17389, Washington, DC 20041, or call 1 800 433 5959 (for booklet
orders only).
