A Resource About Huntington's Disease Society
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is obvious from the answer above that Huntington's Chorea can be a
real tragedy, not only for the patient, but for the family of the patient as
well. Though a rare disease that strikes about 3-4 individuals per million,
the possibility of passing it on to children, before it strikes the patient
marked for the disease, causes anxiety to the extended families as well, who
frequently can find no resources for help, direction and information. But, as
for many other diseases, such an organization does exist and is prepared to
offer a wide variety of important services to those who are in need of them.
Its the Huntington's Disease Society of America, 140 West 22 Street, New York,
NY 10011, and can be reached on its National Hot Line at 1-800-345-HDSA (in
New York State call 212-242-1968) You may request a packet of information
about Huntington's disease which is free for the asking, be placed on the
mailing list for their Newsletter, which features the latest breakthrough and
information concerning the disease, and placed in contact with a local chapter
close to you. But of the services offered, perhaps the most important is
their referral services. The genetic marker test is a difficult one to
perform, and is not generally available. Special techniques are required to
assure the accuracy of the test, and there are some neurologists who have
gained considerable experience with it, and who cooperate with the Society, in
aiding patients. You can obtain their names, as well as all the items I've
mentioned by contacting the Society directly.
