  23. QUESTION:  I thought I had a bad case of the flu.  Instead the doc diagnosed
  24. my case with a rather frightening name, that I still don't understand.  What
  25. is organic dust toxic syndrome?

  29. ANSWER:  It is a nonallergic, noninfectious respiratory illness caused by
  30. the inhalation of organic dust or exposure to agricultural products such as
  31. hay or spores from moldy silage in a confined area.  The disease,
  32. scientifically termed pulmonary mycotoxicosis, is also known as silo-loader's
  33. syndrome since its periodic outbreaks usually occur amongst farmers when they
  34. remove cured feed from silos.
  35.      Symptoms of the illness include muscle aches and a pronounced cough,
  36. accompanied by shakes, chills, fever, headaches, shortness of breath,
  37. sweating, chest pain and anorexia.  The duration of the illness can last
  38. anywhere from a couple of hours to an entire week depending on the length of
  39. exposure and how adequately or inadequately the area is ventilated.  There has
  40. been no evidence of an allergic or viral cause of the illness and there is
  41. rarely, if ever, a need for an afflicted person to require hospitalization.

  43. this diagnosis was made, and will now provide you with important clues to
  44. prevent its reoccurrence.
