TurboIRC Services
Services are internet tools that allow you to accept some type
of connections . For example , the machine that you send your
mail is running a service . TurboIRC can run up to 3 services ,
that are most used on IRC :
- FINGER Service . This listens to port 79
, accept connections and replies with your FINGER defined
string . See Preferences .
- IDENT Service . Some IRC networks
require that you have this service enabled . You can
modify the reply string using Preferences . Your network should
provide you with further information.
- NUKE Service . This is not actually a
service . It is a try to avoid nukes over a network .
"Nuke" is a program that sends a string to port
139 , taking advantage of a bug of Ms Windows 95 and Ms
Windows NT , causing them to crash . By installing the
service , you are not anymore exposed to that bug . You
don't need the service if you have installed the TCP/IP
Patch of Windows 95 or the Service Pack for NT , or you
have Windows 98 installed .
Services can only start if no other program in your system
does such services . So , if you see a message "cannot start
service" , do not panic ; another program is handling this
service .
You may select if you want to see service requests and errors
, using Preferences . Please also note that any machine
can query you of a FINGER or an IDENT , not only IRC networks .
For example , my mail server queries me by connecting to my IDENT
server .
