Find the answers to frequently asked questions below.
A: Using the "mt" commands (magenetic tape manipulation program) for unloading should do the trick. Example:
Q: My disk is not mounting and the system says that the file system is corrupt. What's up?
A: using the "fsck" command (check and repairs filesystem) you may repair an existing filesystem and make it mountable again. Since there is a possibility of data loss, first do a man page on "fsck" to select the best options for your situation.
Q: After logging in, I notice that all of my icons were gone. How do I get them back?
A: By cleaning the cadmin, you should be able to restore all of the icons. Example:
Q: I have an EXB8505 and I do not get an icon plus I only get 2.5 GB of data on a 5.0 GB tape. Why?
A: For the Irix operating system, a EXB8505 is not supported, therefore you mu st make some modifications to your kernel. Call or email us here at LEGASYS for specific information. This will correct the icon and capacity problems.
Q. When booting my system with a 9 GB disk attached I see multiple SCSI bus resets. Is this a problem?
A: No, with an external 9 GB disk connected the system starts faster than the 9 GB drive. Stopping at the system maintenance menu will give the 9 GB drive time to come on-line.
Q: I am interested in a 20 GB RAID system. What is the best way to use this configuration without repartitioning?
A: The standard EFS filesystem limitation on an SGI system is 8 GB. Therefore this RAID system would have to be broken down into 8 GB partitions, but if you purchase 5.3 XFS you may have a file system as big as a terabyte (1,000 gigabytes). 5.3 XFS is available from SGI for about $695.00. NOTE: XFS is to be included in the new IRIX 6.0 scheduled for release in December 1995.
