Shining Path

The Sendero Luminoso, or Shining Path is a countryside-based revolutionary movement in Peru. For the past two decades, they have challenged the governments of Peru, including the present hard line government of Alberto Fujimori. Sendero Luminoso is considered by many scholars of terrorist affairs to be among the most elusive, secretive and brutal guerrilla organizations of the twentieth century. Headed by Abimael Guzman, who is now in jail, the Shining Path relies on the purist communist ideologies of Mao, Marx and Lenin. The core of the violent movement's popularity is resentment -the peasantry's exclusion from Peru's uneven economic development which has left the rich MUCH richer and done nothing at all for the peasantry.
