General

Many of the documents and software packages on this CD are updated regularly. If you want to be sure of getting the latest version, you'll need to check the relevant home site. There is a complete list of document home sites elsewhere on this CD.
The Internet is a rapidly changing place. You may find that some documents have links to sites or documents that no longer exist. Although I checked the links in all the index files on the CD before it went to press, that doesn't mean they'll still be there now. If necessary, use a search engine to track down any lost documents.

The following symbols are used in all the index pages:

	This symbol indicates that the associated link will take you to a document elsewhere on the CD.
	This symbol indicates that the associated link will take you to a resource elsewhere on the World-Wide Web. You will need an Internet connection to make use of links marked like this.
	This symbol indicates that clicking on the associated link will install some software onto your hard disk. See the notes on installing software below.

You can use the "Find" button on the toolbar (or "Find" in the "Edit" menu, or press control-F) to search the current document for a particular string. This can be particularly useful with the full document index and the main software catalogue to locate a particular document or piece of software.
Documents and software provided on this CD are all subject to copyright by their respective authors. See the CD licensing information for more details. If you want to redistribute anything from this CD elsewhere, make sure that you check the copyright notice first. If in doubt, or if there is no explicit copyright notice, contact the document's author to ask permission. Note that it is extremely unlikely that you will be permitted to redistribute anything for profit.
Some of the documents on this CD will inevitably be slightly out-of-date by the time you buy this CD. If you have an Internet connection, you can use the document home site list to get the latest version of any document direct from its home site.

Using frames

The index pages use frames by default; the topmost frames are used as index bars to enable you to navigate around the CD easily. If you find the index bars irritating, or if they take up too much space on your display, click on the no frames link at the top of the home page.
You can restore the index bars by pressing the "Home" button or by clicking on the restore frames link at the top of the frameless home page.

Using bookmarks

You can use bookmarks to make it easy to go back to pages you visit frequently (either on the CD or externally). Bookmarks are listed in the "Bookmark" menu; just select the bookmark for a page you want to visit from the menu.
To add a bookmark to a document in a frame, click the right button of your mouse in the frame and select "Add Bookmark" from the menu which appears. Note that using "Add Bookmark" from the main "Bookmarks" menu will add a bookmark to the page containing the frames (normally the home page for the CD).
If you have a lot of bookmarks, use the "Go to Bookmarks..." option from the "Bookmarks" menu. This displays a window listing all your bookmarks. You can rearrange them by dragging and dropping, or by selecting an item and then choosing "Sort Bookmarks" from the "Item" menu of the Bookmarks window. You can also delete them
The name of a bookmark is the title of the corresponding document. If you want to, you can change this by selecting "Properties" from the "Item" menu of the Bookmarks window.
You can arrange your bookmarks into categories by creating folders. Select "Insert Folder..." from the "Item" menu of the Bookmarks window. You can then drag selected bookmarks and drop them in a folder. Folders appear as submenus in the main "Bookmarks" menu.

Using the right mouse button

Clicking the right mouse button will bring up a pop-up menu. In a frame, the menu lets you add a bookmark to the document in the frame.
Right-clicking over a link lets you open the linked document (the same as clicking the left mouse button), or you can open the linked document in a new window, or you can copy the link (the URL) to the clipboard or save the linked document to disk, or you can add a bookmark to the linked document without loading it first.
Right-clicking over an image is similar; you can view or save the image, or copy the URL to the clipboard.

Uninstalling

The CD installation process creates a subdirectory called BURKS in your Windows directory (typically C:\WINDOWS\BURKS). A subdirectory called BURKS is also created in your temporary file directory as specified by the TEMP environment variable (C:\WINDOWS\TEMP by default). If in doubt, you can display the actual directory name by going to a command prompt and typing

```
To uninstall BURKS, just delete these directories and all their contents.
Netscape's settings are stored in a file called NETSCAPE.INI in the BURKS subdirectory. You can delete this file if you want to restore the default settings; it will be recreated automatically the next time you start BURKS.
Your bookmarks are stored in a file called BOOKMARK.HTM in the BURKS subdirectory; you might want to save a backup copy of this file if you are going to delete the subdirectory.
Temporary files created when installing software or using external file viewers are stored in a subdirectory called BURKS within your normal temporary directory (as identified by the TEMP environment variable) so that if your temporary directory is C:\TEMP, all temporary files from this CD will be stored in C:\TEMP\BURKS. You should make sure that the disk where this directory is located has enough free space to cope with any files you install from the CD or download across the Internet (20M is enough free space to handle most eventualities). Temporary files are normally deleted when they're no longer needed, but Windows help files (which can be viewed directly from the CD) are not, because I haven't found a way of determining when a file is no longer needed. However, all files in this directory are automatically deleted at startup. If you find yourself running out of disk space you can ensure that any files in the temporary directory are deleted by restarting BURKS. It might be a good idea to set your TEMP environment variable to point to another disk if this happens (or free up some space if you don't have another drive available).
If your version of Windows uses Program Manager, you can add BURKS to one of your program manager groups (or create a new group for it). Select the group you want to use (or use "New" from the "File" menu to create a new program group), then select "New" from the "File" menu and create a new program item. Set the command line to X:\BURKS.EXE, where X is the drive letter for your CD.
If your version of Windows uses the Windows 95 interface, you can add BURKS to the "Start" menu by selecting "Taskbar" from the "Settings" entry in the "Start" menu, then clicking on the "Start Menu Programs" tab at the top. Click on "Add..." and set the command line to X:\BURKS.EXE, where X is the drive letter for your CD. Alternatively, you can use Windows Explorer to create a shortcut to X:\BURKS.EXE and then move the shortcut onto the desktop.
