Stolen Bike Archive - Story by Harry Brogan

After purchasing this bike on a Friday a friend and I had a great time riding. He owned a Giant Iguana and we were room mates. Saturday rolled around and we were both looking forward to another day of riding and just generally wasting time on the bike paths that we have available here.
He went ahead to a friends house to get a couple of things and I decided to meet up with him a bit later. When I did I saw his bike leaning against the house. I placed mine next to his and knocked on the door. He was ready to go so I stepped inside. He placed his coat on and when we both went
back outside BOTH bikes were gone!!!! After calling the police, (and getting little help from them) we went ahead and decided to keep our eyes open ourselves. I spent the better part of that year looking at almost every bike as it went passed me on the paths. Of course, it was never found as
this is a college town and very few stolen bikes are ever found. But I often thought of what I would do if it was found. I think that I would have saved the police and court system a lot of trouble. I would have made them take me to the nearest bike shop and have them use THEIR credit card to
purchase a new bike. I thoought this might teach them a lesson that the courts could never have. In any case I did learn one very big lesson.....ALWAYS LOCK IT!!! I have never left a bike unlocked since and have not had another one stolen since. It is even kept locked in my garage. Better safe than sorry!!
