There are two main aspects to using DesktopPlus, Switching Between Desktops, and Moving Windows Between Desktops. For specific information on DesktopPlus Dialogs see the Dialogs section.

1. Switching Between Desktops

It is possible to switch between desktops in DesktopPlus in the following ways:

1.1 Using the Toolbar or Taskbar

DesktopPlus has two control bars which can be used to switch desktops and access other features of DesktopPlus. The Toolbar is a floating window containing numerous icons depending on how it is setup. It and it's Context Menu look something like this:

Toolbar in Extended Mode
(Popups waiting on Desktop 3)

Toolbar Context Menu

The Toolbar is displayed by default, but can be hidden or shown through DesktopPlus' context menus (a context menu is a menu which is displayed as a result of the user clicking on something with the right mouse button).

To show the toolbar right-click on any of the DesktopPlus icons in the system tray and select "Show Toolbar". To hide the Toolbar right-click on the Toolbar and select " Hide Toolbar" from the context menu.

The Taskbar serves the same function as the Toolbar, except that it is located in the system Tray (usually) at the bottom right of the screen. It and it's Context Menu look something like this:

Taskbar in Extended Mode
(Popups waiting on Desktop 3)

Taskbar Context Menu

The Taskbar is displayed by default, but can be hidden or shown just as the Toolbar can.

To show the Taskbar right-click on the DesktopPlus icon in the system tray and select "Show Taskbar Controls" from the. context menu. To hide the Taskbar right-click on any of the DesktopPlus system tray icons and select "Hide Taskbar Controls ".

Both control bars can be displayed in either Extended or Compact Mode. In Extended Mode, which is the default, an icon is displayed for every Desktop which is configured. An additional icon is displayed for the Arrange Dialog, which appears on the far right in the images above. In extended mode you can switch directly to a desktop by clicking on the corresponding desktop's icon on the Toolbar or Taskbar. You can also raise the Desktop Properties Dialog by selecting "Desktop X Properties"

In Compact mode three icons are displayed:

Taskbar in compact mode

The middle icon indicates which desktop is currently active and the white arrows to the left and right of this icon can be used to move up or down the configured desktops. For example, in this case clicking on the left arrow would move to desktop 2 and clicking on the right arrow would move to desktop 4. Clicking on the middle icon raises the Arrange Dialog.

In extended mode, you can switch to compact mode by right-clicking on any of the Toolbar or Taskbar icons and selecting "Compact Controls". In compact mode, you can switch to extended mode by selecting "Extended Controls" from the context menu.

The Desktops marked in red () indicate that there are popups waiting on that Desktop. DesktopPlus automatically moved a popup window to the same desktop as it's parent, at the time the dialog was created, because the parent was on a desktop other than the current. This feature is controlled through the Options Dialog.

Toolbar-only options: In addition to the common features described above, the Toolbar has two extra functions. The first, Always On Top allows you to have the Toolbar floating above all other windows, so that it is always available. This state is indicated by a tick mark. The Fix Layout/Position option allows you to specify how the Toolbar is placed on each desktop. When this option is ticked the same position and orientation is used on every desktop. When it is not picked the position and orientation of the Toolbar is saved per-desktop, so that next time you switch to a given desktop, the Toolbar will be in the same position as you left it.

1.2 Switching Using Shortcuts

When DesktopPlus is installed the Setup program asks if it should create shortcuts in the Start Menu, on the Desktop, and, if Internet Explorer 4 is installed in the Quick Launch bar (part of the system task bar).

The Setup program creates nine icons, one for each desktop that can be configured. Initially only 5 desktops are setup and the remaining four icons (6-9) perform no function. These extra icons become operational as more desktops are configured through the Options Dialog.

You can use any of the shorcuts created in the Start Menu, on the Desktop or in the Quick Launch bar to switch to a desktop. Additionally you can move and copy these shortcuts, just like other shortcuts.

1.3 Switching Using HotKeys

Initially each configured desktop is assigned a HotKey. These are defined as ALT-desk-number, e.g. ALT-1 (Hold down ALT then press 1) for Desktop 1, ALT-2 for Desktop 2, etc. HotKeys are configurable through the Desktop Properties Dialog. HotKeys work anywhere in Windows (as long as DesktopPlus is running) and from any application.

1.4 Switching Via the Arrange Dialog

It is also possible to switch between desktops (and applications) using the Arrange Dialog. This is explained in detail in the Arrange Dialog section.

2. Moving Windows Between Desktops

Moving windows between desktops is done exclusively through the Arrange Dialog which is covered in detail in the Arrange Dialog section.
